Guys I need some help. I can’t afford 600 bucks worth of rod holders and I work for a fastener company so I figured I would throw a few nuts and bolts together and make my own. Some guy on the sale page had some homemade ones that inspired me so I drafted up my concoction and here we are. The base is just a 1” single arm ram mount. And the rest is just threaded rod a coupling nut and some conduit covering it. My problem is the weight is to much for the mount to hold steady. I have tried putting in a set screw in the ball at the top of the mount but that doesn’t hold so then I drilled and tapped it and put a thumb screw in. That didn’t hold so now I’m stumped. Anybody made anything like this that can help me?

Pretty sure your're going to need something a bit stronger than that.

Put the ram part at the top. You’ve got too much leverage with it at the bottom. You could use a flat floor flange at the bottom for a rigid mount then with the ram at the top it should work.

Need a bigger ball mount to work on that principle for the leverage that is being applied to the base mount is my guess. Looks awfully good, done a fine job, but the base mount / ball is to small for individuals IMO.

Take the long piece of Pipe out then mount the Ram on the side of the boat with a short piece of pipe... on second thought - any good fish that bites will let the Ram mount move -- go back to the drawing board, it has to be sturdy on a strike

That rod holder looks great! To save some time, headaches maybe look at the Millennium Spyderlok rod holders. I have used the same set for 3 years now and never had any issues. You should be able to find them for $125. That will hold 4 Rod’s securely and get you on the water sooner. Just a thought.

Go to this post and look at how these are made. Since you work with fasteners you should be able to replicate these pretty easy.

Why do they have to move at the bottom, I got single stands and a spyderlok on top, fully adjustable and I can fish any technique I want to?

It goes without saying but the setup on BRMs boat was (is) the best I have seen,
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
