Default Picked up this used HB 798C

I'm happy with it and got it at a great price. The instrument is portable and therefore meets my needs while renting boats. Just gotta figure this thing out to utilize it to maximum capability

I think your 798 is pretty much the same as my 598 but with a bigger screen and the preset screen buttons. When you get it out, make some recordings while you drive around and play them at home. The recordings from your water will teach you tons about your unit. It will take a couple of trips for sure to get comfortable with it. It's a really good unit, congrats and enjoy!

    Thanks 6Pound.

I took it out last Saturday - worked as advertised but I had no idea what I was looking at other than the bottom and obvious structure.

This past week I have read the manual, watched YT vids, been read this forum, and played with the settings in simulation mode.

The wife and I are hitting the water this Saturday armed with a little more knowledge. It's a smallish county lake, so shouldn't be too overwhelming. I will take your advice and make some recordings.

If it's a side scan unit, it takes a bit of time to get the hang of it. I do like to show the water column for those fish I pass directly over, they show up better in the dark column rather than the clean bottom view. That would be under the SI enhance menu.

I'm a believer in the recordings for learning. I like roughly 10 minute segments or so; others claim that the longer ones can take a long time to load in something like Humviewer. Don't be shy about changing color pallets, sensitivity, contrast, etc. when playing back the recordings. Even changing the back lighting level under the power button can change how the display looks to your eyes. You may find that what looks good at home is not the same as what you like while on the water but at least you'll have some sort of baseline comparison to work from.

I fish small waters myself, less than 100 acres is my rule. 95% of my fishing is in less than 20' of water. I like to keep the side view at less than 50' since my waters are small and it doesn't take too long to cover most of it. Easier to see things when you don't compress a long view in to a short space.

I think the only option on these units is the 455, I don't think the 800 is an option with that transducer/head unit. I just checked and my 598 is 455 only.

Post up your pictures and questions after your next trip. There are some really sharp guys here to answer your tougher questions; I'm just a new guy and don't know much compared to the other guys.

But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night .............

Hahaha. I am with you. Will do. No one posts pics of trips when the fish don't cooperate but I will if that be the case.

God bless you 6pound - thanks for the helpful dialogue. MTF on Saturday afternoon.

I have the 798 hdsi and i really like it. Does yours have down imaging or side imaging? Does it take screenshots? If it takes screenshots there is a program called Hummview that you can look at picture after you get back home.
    Good luck and tight lines!!
