If cranking...get the PSTs...if not, the Southern crappie 14s.. If fishing by yourself allot. 16s are hard to handle with the net..Southern Crappie is now making a cranking rod in 14...I have one, and like it, but I need different lengths the way I crank

It's all about personal preference, I don't mind fishing with my 12s.

I agree with reese,14fters are about as long as I want.16's would be better in shallow water,but hard to deal with and if you have someone inexperienced in the boat 16's would be a handful for them.Another think you got to consider is getting that shallow spring fish in the boat,catch a fish 2ft deep on a 14ft pole is challenging enough for me

Erin, I am experimenting with a pole that will change cranking and if it goes well I will let the cat out of the bag next Saturday. Concentrate on what you want for spider rigging, you can crank with a broom stick if you want!!!!

Hahaha your rite! As of right now I crank with 2 12 west points and 2 6.5 foot spinning reel set ups. With my 14 foot jon boat the 12s have been perfectly fine but I am in the process of getting a bigger boat and I want to go to a little longer rod.

Those West Points are as good as it gets for cranking

Erin, get the 14 ft southern crappie in the new cranking rod. I have 12's 14' and 16's. That new southern is more like a PST and a much better rod. I have the 12's in pinnacal and PST and 14-16 in southern. Fishing by myself mostly the 14 is the best rod, 16 is just to much in 17 ft boat and one person don't care what some say. It gets to be a mess in a hurry with that long a pole in one hand and net in the other with no place to shove the rod. They work best with big boat 2 people and really long net.

Erin, go with the best you can afford even if it is just buying 2 at a time.I've never used Pst's, Southern Crappie, or Capps Coleman rods so I can't comment on those. I use 12' West Points and 2 8 ft.Uglystik striper rods in med./lt. action for cranks when pulling. I use 4 12ft. West Points for pushing cranks with 3 plus oz. of lead.I like 14' rods for spidering and they are long enough considering trying to net fish and getting your baits away from the boat.I have a 17.5ft. boat so anything longer would be a hassle for me especially under a Sportsbrella.Download the Grizzly Jig catalog and check out what they have and pricing.Like Rees said you need to put your hands on the rod you are considering. Can that same rod serve you with a lot of different functions in 1 rod?If you buy cheap, later you will want something better.Trying to redeem any money back from those cheaper rods will be tough because we all have a garage full of them ourselves.If the fish are really biting you can catch em on a bamboo cane pole.There are a lot of products that catch more fishermen than fish!!!Just my .

I've got 12 poles on my toon. Every one of them are 14 foot Southern crappie rods and I have used them for every technique and never broke a tip yet. And caught fish all different ways. For me they work just fine cranking. I have swung some awful big fish in the boat with them. That Kevlar in them poles are tuff! Haven't tried the new cranking rods.
