Brush pile tips
I'm having trouble knowing where the brush pile is exactly after I pass over it...I usually throw a marker bouy over the back of the boat but sometimes I ride over where the bouy is and the pile isn't in thaT spot??? Frustrating..

Mine is a Humminbird helix 5 I just got it a month or two ago it's my first fish finder so I'm still learning it can be confusing

Yes it can be confusing, is the TD on your TM or on the transom?

Could be a school of baitfish. I've done the same thing but trust me when you see a big blob on the bottom going up, it's brush. You may want to adjust the sensitivity on the depthfinder.

Alright I'll remember that I may try to get some pictures tomorrow and post them and see if I'm looking at baitfish or brush piles

get you a gps, after you find the piles, mark them on the gps, then you can go right to them next time.

My fishfinder has one on it I might try that and start going by the gps waypoint marks instead of using a bouy

The bouy can drift off a bit or you may have over or under shot the mark. I've had it happen to me and the deeper the water the more likely. What I do is slowly circle the bouy until I pick up the signal again. Two things that make it easier is to have your front DF transducer on the trolling motor or otherwise mounted up front near the TM. 2nd is the GPS. I don't know if your Helix is just sonar or a GPS combo but a GPS is invaluable in locating and marking brush piles.Originally Posted by 14trackergrzzly
If you just have one DF with the transducer on the transom it is more difficult especially if you are 15 feet away at the front. It's easy to get turned off line separated by that much space and the brush pile could be on one side or the other.
It can be done, it just takes practice and you'll get the hang of it.

How fast are you going when you throw the marker out? Maybe by the time you notice the brush pile and then throw out the marker, you are well past it. I usually try to throw the marker out as soon as I see the brush and then throw it several feet behind the boat. I still will likely have to search for it slowly to know the exact spot. Marking it with the GPS is a good idea, but GPS has a range of 10 feet or so you could still be off a bit. Sometimes I mark it with GPS so I can come back to it later and then when I want to fish it, I look for it slowly with the fish finder and then chunk the marker buoy.
