remember get your minnows above the dam on a lot of lakes as many waters below dams have the big head carp good way to get them started in your local waters. also had a friend that would spend 5$ to save a 1$. this was when das was above 4$ a gal. would run to 3 or 4 places to get his own minnows. he only wants 3 or 4 doz. go figure what he saved when he could buy them for 2$ a doz..the guy is worth somewhere around a million dollars. thakes all kinds.

Bought a 12-pk, got home and it was like they counted every beer one by one. Exactly 12! Anheuser-Busch don’t give a very good count.

We all like to get a bargain but when you are used to a dozen minnows being a scoopful and then get an actual count, it makes it a little hard to know how many to ask for. I don't mind supporting local shops but if I know I will get a better count at shop a vs shop b, I will prolly get them at shop a. Guarantee to make it up in rods reels and jig bodies just ask anyone that picks up my tackle oz.
God bless Charlie Brewer and Bobby Garland.

This is how I operate- its called the 'power of the purse' (not "purse" literally, but you get it). I'm glad people patronize the minnow counter stores-they will need the business and I might need them open in certain situations. No one is holding a gun to anyone else's head WRT how they run their business or train their employees. It all comes down to which business appreciates the big picture versus the little picture. It is a competitive business and the market will decide which businesses prosper long term. I don't feel one iota of guilt using my free choice to go to the businesses who give me the courtesy of a few extra minnows-my one fear is running out of the correct size minnows when I'm short of a limit. When I buy 4 dozen at Dicks Bait and Tackle, I know I won't have that problem, plus I might have enough to fish the next day as well, if I so desire. Some are too big to use for Missouri crappie, so those I don't use and they end up being racoon food.

I get both sides but can anyone tell me any other industry or product you EXPECT to get MORE than you paid for?

I’m not saying anyone should count every single minnow and the vast majority of places eyeball them at best. I bet if you actually counted your minnows when you think you were short changed you got more than a 12 minnows for each dozen requested. Anyone ever got 11?

Bill many a time I have wanted to count the minnows with a customer when they say they are shorted. Use to have guys come in and want a dozen and then complain with a 15-18 ct. Them would say we'll just go ahead and give me another dozen of that's all I'm going to get. The limit is 15 crappie. Not sure what good 12 would do anyway.

If we ordered 4000 minnows for each tank. If each customer only got an extra 4-5 minnows for each dozen they requested how many dozen would we have got shorted on being able to sell at the end of that tank? I am sure most got even a better count than that most times at Everharts. It turns in to a lot of dollars. Bait is a losing situation for most shops. Water filtration system, chemicals, losing minnows and wages for maintaining and cleaning tanks.

I go with "dozen" being what is called "a term of art". More of a figure of speech, more so than an exact number.

Hate for my first post to be about this but I felt I needed to throw my 2 pennies in here. I've never been a big minnow fisherman but am getting into the spider rigging this year and have started using minnows. I stopped at Everharts a couple weekends ago on the way to the lake. I bought some supplies and a bait cooler. They were very pleasant and helpful. The young man working the minnows offered to put it together for me and loaded it up with minnows. Now I didn't count each one as I just trusted that there was plenty in there. If I have to worry about whether there is 45 or 55 when I buy 4 dozen, its probably time to find a new hobby because I can't afford this one. It by far is the cheapest part of the trip for me. Everharts gave me very good service. To actually say they "suck" because you don't think you got more than what you ask for, I just don't see it. They went out of their way to give me great service and minnows that were very large and in fact lasted for three days.

I just wondered if you go to the store and buy a dozen eggs, do you say the store sucked because you didn't get 15 or 16? When you go to the bakery to get a dozen doughnuts do you bitch because you didn't get two? You get what you pay for. If you want 2 doz. buy 2 doz. They stock minnows as a added service to their customer. Just saying.....
