    Default Help with Cypress

I am wanting to give Cypress Lake (Benton, LA) a try and am hoping to get a little help from this forum. I are not expecting anyone to give me coordinates on their honey holes but if y'all can give me some advice on general areas and types of structure that would be best for this time of year (late October) it would be appreciated. I don't know anything about the lake or how it fishes so anything you can tell me would be a help.

    Thanks for the help.

man are you in luck. i have fished it about 4 times in the last few weeks. each time i do better than the time before. be sure to check out my posts on here. they say "cypress" in the thread name.

here is what i would do if i were going tomorrow. (wishful thinking. lol) if you launch at the public launch down by the dam, which is where most folks launch, go out from the launch and go about 10:30 or so. that should be kinda north west. you will go around a point on your right which is almost directly across from the launch. go past that point and keep going toward the beach. the channel zigs and zags all across the lake in front of the beach. the lake bottlenecks right out in front of the beach. every fish that ends up down by the dam from the north end of the lake for the winter uses the channel in that spot. it's like a crappie super highway. LOL if you have a graph with a decent gps, it should show the channel everywhere on the lake. but i would concentrate on the part of the lake from about 100 yards south of the bottle neck to just north of the bottleneck. if you don't have a gps that shows the channel, here is the easiest way i know to fish. if you are in deeper than 13 foot of water, you are in the channel up there. try to stay in the channel and fish either jigs or shiners about 13-15 foot deep. only problem is if youi get out of the channel, there are some hang ups. seems that the bigger fish have been coming off jigs, but shiners are doing great too.

i hope this helps. here are a few me and big john caught out there saturday afternoon.

shoot me a PM if ya want my number. i can prolly explain it better over the phone.

You can't get any better info than what doc gave you. If you want a different way to catch them try pulling some crankbaits. They have been working for me in the same area that doc mentioned

Be sure to go by the office and get you a sticker for your boat and trailer because not only do you have to pay to launch, you must pay for the privilege of fishing there. The stickers for your boat and trailer are good for one year. I have forgotten how much they cost, but think they are about $15.00. You used to be able to buy a sticker that included the launch fees, but you had to fish there about 20 times a year for that one to pay off. I believe it was about $65.00.

Docwaldo was heads up about the channel out in front of the beach area. I have caught lots of fish there in years past, but that channel is more crooked than a snake and is hard to stay on especially if the wind is blowing. I sunk a bunch of bamboo buckets along the west side of the channel several years ago before I moved away. Those bamboo buckets used to hold a ton of fish as they migrated from the north end of the lake to the south. The west side of the channel has a steeper dropoff than the east side and the crappie could quickly and easily move from deep to shallow and vice versa depending up where the shad were.
