Might want to fabricate something like in the image below. This will prevent them from lifting it off the ball when attached, and then flip it over and lock when unhitched.

That just sucks. I hate leaving a trailer on my truck when I have to leave it someplace. I use a locking pin for the receiver and lock pin on the trailer tongue. I guess I never thought of the SOBs removing the nut on the ball. But they'd have to have a good wrench to do it. I use a 2' long wrench just for use with trailer ball and I torque that sucker down way tight. But I guess if they are determined enough, they'll do whatever it takes.

As far as a trailer stolen I have not experienced that one, but I have had a set of custom wheels stolen off my trailer sitting at the ramp along with a matching spare. Since then I have had a set of 3 locking wheel nuts fabricated at a local machine shop. Since I have had nuts loosened and laying on the ground but my wheels have not been missing. Just a thought for all to consider......Ranger

Ranger. Feel I should know the answer but what is a locking wheel nut? Have to admit I never considered that someone would steal my trailer. I use some really remote ramps at times.

Many different types to choose from :

Some lock with a key, while some can only be removed with a special socket. Keyed ones are probably harder to remove, though. I have the special socket type on my spare, and it can be (& has been, by me) removed with a pair of Vise Grips. Even if they couldn't get the locking nut off, it wouldn't take but a few minutes longer to remove the spare tire carrier, tire & all. Might be a good idea to have that welded to the trailer frame.

We've had instances where trailers have been removed from vehicles, by undoing the bolt & taking the trailer with the hitch ball still in the receiver. Welding the nut to the ball stops that, but doesn't protect the wheels from being stolen or damaged.

You can not get to my lug nuts with any type of pliers. They are recessed making it impossible. My locking nuts takes a special socket but unlike any I have ever seen. Again had them special made for my wheels including the special socket.....Ranger

It is sad we have to go to these extremes today. I'm sure a lot of the older guys remember when we never even locked the doors to our homes and a lot of guys would just throw their truck keys in the floor board. Lock the trailer "Whaaaat"

Yeah I remember when my grandpa moved from Coffeeville to Lincoln Arkansas in the 80's He never locked his doors. Used to blow my mind. Town sure has changed as now he deadbolts everything! I blame a lot of things now a days on the internet. One of the greatest and worst inventions ever. It gives too many yardbirds, creeps and evil people too much access too bad stuff and bad people at the click of a button.
