The SpotLightScan will find its niche in some fishing method somewhere...

Unfortunately...it doesn't seem to be in any of the normal crappie fishing methods...

But then again...crappie fishing is not any sonar brand's target market....(we don't have the $$$ the big boys have)...

Next time clarify what you mean when you say it is a joke for crappie fishing. There are many ways to catch a crappie and for trollers, imho, the Terrova has been one of the better things to happen.

Down here, we are either vertical jigging or dock shooting. The brush piles we fish are mainly man made and pretty small. You have to be able to position on top of them to catch fish and I could NOT maintain a 20' radius of a brush pile with iPilot. I had a PowerDriveV2 with factory iPilot and later a Terrova also with factory iPilot. MK had me take it to a factory authorized repair center in Dallas where they replaced all the electronics with factory new and it didn't help one bit. They advertise a 5' radius but, I'll bet the farm you won't get that performance in an enclosed swimming pool!
It may work great if you don't need precise positioning but, if you do, forget it.

100% in agreement. I owned 2 Terrovas with I-Pilot and what a waste of money for my type of fishing which is the same as yours. MK is not telling the truth about "spot Lock"

The Terrova is a great machine for trolling but I don't troll. I like to feel the thump or see my line jump. Trolling seems to be more like Commercial fishing to me, but ''to each his own"

I think these auto tm are great for many people but to stay over a spot with presion a fine tune cable man will put any other unit to shame,i bought the mg mi5 and it do a good job but it won't stand a light to a good cable man,but now my age is catching up with me and so i am trying to go with auto, they do have some good stuff on them but i could stay in one spot with cable and never look at tm

Stymie, I wasn't joking and I certainly wasn't putting anyone down. Not intentionally anyway. I was simply referring to the 'spotlock' feature. MK makes some great products and I currently have a cable steer Fortrex and love it. BUT, (isn't there always a but?) when any manufacturer advertises something, they should be held accountable when the product doesn't perform as advertised. I spent a lot of money based on their claim that spotlock would hold within a 5' radius. If it did, I'd be one happy camper and recommend it to the world. But, it doesn't, it can't and it won't! Period! That is false advertising and MK should be held accountable.
I haven't tried the new MG with the same spotlock type feature but, I'm betting it won't hold as advertised either. And, for us verticle jigging crappie guys it won't work either.
As Gene said, cable steer is the only way to go.

Okie Bob, Gene & I have the MG Xi5. Gene is old and gets worn out after a day on the cable steer.. We are trying to like the MG and we both agree that the MG does a much, much better job than the MK as far as spot lock. It seems like the stronger the wind, the better it works.

We will be giving updates as we use the MG more.
