Suffolk-A slow day that ended with a bang.

I headed out to Suffolk this morning and was met with a nice 30 minute rain shower which made it very cold out on the lake. It took me over 5 hours to catch my first crappie but it was 14.75" and 1lb 10oz.

I caught it casting a blue ice BGBS around 14' deep. I spotted a school of fish with my side imaging and caught it near them, probably holding to one of the stumps you see to the right.

Then I went another 5 hours without a crappie. (only hooked 2 gar during this time) It was 5:30 and since I didn't have a single bite on any of my poles hanging over the side I put them away and started casting Kalins Money jig to the windward side of the shoreline. I put a bobber 19" above my jig and landed this guy.

1.5 hours later I had 19 more crappie to go with my 1 from earlier giving me 20 for the day but they were all 11" plus with 7 of them at 1lb or more. (2 at 1lb 7oz, 1lb 4oz, 2 at 1lb 3oz, 1lb 1oz, and 1lb even)

It was crazy how hard they were fighting. I even missed a couple of nice ones. Thanks to everyone (especially JimB) who talked about fishing shallow late in the day. This is my first time having this kind of luck during March fishing 19" deep. (the water was 4'-8' deep)

Water temp was 49 for most of the day but finally warmed up to 53 by days end.

Good report and a good day's fishing! Once again, hanging in there paid off in the end.

Hey George great report!! Now next time your on Kerr try the backs of the creeks fishing 5 ft of water fishing 18" deep. I have slayed them even in late feb. I'm glad you found them!!!

Nice report indeed and glad you had a couple of strong pulls on the end of those rods. Were you at the usual spot?

Good job Tap,the bobber method works for me too.I use a weighted one and it will cast a mile.I like to pull it a foot or two and pause just long enough for the jig to settle and pull it again.Great way to control the depth of your jig and to cast it a long way.They will also bite it sitting still.It works for up to 6 or seven ft.from bobber to jig with a seven ft rod after that its hard to cast with so much line hanging down.Glad you got on em and did not give up.I caught 9 from 2 to 3 pounds yesterday,speckled trout that is and used the bobber method for them too.The cigar casts better and the round ones wobble the jig just rite.

Good report, nice crappies and love those SI pics.who knows how many ways to catch a crappie, nothing like trying many ways to find out which is better for that day or time
