Thread: What rods do you all use when vertical jigging or casting tiny lead heads?

one rod in hand vert jigging i use 1/16 or 1/8 on a 9' BnM Sam Heaton Rod with 6 lb vicious hi vis on a shimano 500

Casting 1/16 1/24 & 1/32 I use a 6' Cabelas Classic UL with a Pfluger, the reel is like a 2000 size. 4lb Hi vis vicious panfish line.

I use to use 5 and 5'6 with 500 size reels...Tapout persuaded me to go bigger and I havent looked back since! More line capacity, less friction on the line as it comes off of the reel. more leverage on the longer rod to sling jigs or set the hook.

I still use a 4'6 or 5' with a shimano 500 to shoot jigs under bridges. Also I use light wire hooks while vertical jigging because vert jiggin is usually my last resort and most often happens in thick brush... hence the light wire hooks and 6 lb test

I just use a 6' ugly stick, with 4lb test and a 1/16 oz jig head.... Works pretty well for me.

Ugly sticks are great for cats but the Ultralights feels like a mushy wet swamp stick

Everybody has a different opinion. Ugly stick was given to me, they must not have liked it either...lol

I use a 5 and 1/2 for casting and jigging,my opinion it has better feel than longer rods, and shoot and cast as far as needed.don't need a half mile cast to catch a fish that's only 30 feet away,longer cast lose a lot of feel, my 2cents worth

Cabelas 6' Ultralight with a Tica Cetus 500 reel, 4lb. line for casting 1/32, 1/24 and 1/16oz. jigs.

I seldom vertical jig, preferring to use a Cabela's 5 1/2' pistol grip light action casting rod with a small Quantum baitcaster and 12lb. braid with a 1/8 oz. blade bait in open water jigging situations. Cast parallel to the channel and slow-Yo-yo the blade back on a tight line. You will be surprised at the effectiveness of this on cold water deep fish.

DBR, it really depends on if your casting or vertical jigging. When I cast at beaverhuts, I perfer a 6'6" rod - recommed by a fishing guide at Anna, so I can stay further away from structure (to avoid spooking fish) when casting near to docks, under dock or vertical jigging I use 5'6".
I agree about the ulgy stick, I love them for many fishing options and own 5-6 of them! Got one thats only 4.5 or 5' that was for casting light crappie jigs, Its like fishing with damp spaghetti ( but fun to catch spot in shallows on!!)
