Thread: New to crappie

Yeah, I'll definitely make a stake bed, probably bamboo, and take it out on my friends flat bottom, since I'm not sure how the kayak would handle it lol. There's probably only 30-40 people who fish it, and that's mostly for bass, which is what I originally fished for there.

The fish finder is gonna really help me a lot to figure out how deep the lake gets, what structure is there, etc. and it's gps also so I can mark waypoints (huge plus!) thank y'all for all the pointers, I'll use them as much as possible once I can get in the water again!

My dad and I went catfishing yesterday, didn't do too well, but I was able to cut a bunch of bamboo for brush piles by the ramp.

I also got paid a few days early because of the holidays so I was able to find a great deal on a fishfinder so I went ahead and ordered it, and it arrived yesterday. I still need to get the battery, mount, etc. and then it'll be good to go.

For those who have kayaks and rigged electronics, what is the easiest way to go about it?

you might go on facebook and join the yak community there ....some of them boys gots lots of experience .....
as far as how to find the crappie on a 60 acre lake ...trial and error works well and ask the local folks that hit it as well ....this time of year they are likely up in a creek with the bait or parked on the bottom in deep water ........
really steep banks many times indicate sharp drop offs close to shore as well ....they love to hang around ledges and drop offs .....and any fallen timber that's visible might hold them as well .....docks and cattails to .....
a depth finder will help you a lot .....

As far as baits it has a few factors. If the water is dark or muddy then I usually go with a black and chartreuse 1" shad. Clear water I will go with anything that looks like a real shad. Especially glitter filled baits. They can catch the smallest amount of light and trigger a bite. Its all about trial and error. Some days they bite one color and the next something else. Crappie are very picky at times.

Thanks guys, Ketchn I'm on a few different yak communities on fb, and they've been helpful.

I also received my fishfinder before Christmas, now I just need to get on the water. I rigged it so that it would be 100 percent portable, only thing that stinks is the handle on the box no longer works.

Yes it is! It has the lake insight chip as well. I got it from west marine for $199 plus free two day shipping. You can't beat that price, and I like the gps capability so that I can mark brushpiles
