Are there any good crappie lakes around San Antonio area?
Just got the words that the army will be sending us to Fort Sam Houston pretty soon. Are there any good crappie/white bass/hybrid stripe bass lakes around the area that might be good to start out? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The is a lake called Canyon lake a few miles north of SA and I've caught a few crappie while bass fishing in it. I don't think it is good but it would at least give you a place to go.
Another lake 75 miles south of San Antonio called Choke Canyon. I think the crappie fishing is decent there.
I have never fished for crappie but I think next time I go out I just might give it a go.

I am a bass and crappie fishing guide and can tell you that Canyon's crappie fishing is pretty good right now. Largemouth and smallmouth are getting better. Both bass and crappie are in pre-spawn patterns. My clients are averaging about 15 keeper crappie per half day, when weather permits. Another guide on the lake does a lot of white bass / striper trolling and he is having good success, as well when the weather cooperates.
Choke Canyon is a wonderful crappie lake but is extremely low and many of us have elected to postpone guiding on the lake until water levels improve.
Lake LBJ is another very good crappie and bass lake and the water level is constant.

Depends on the time if year , water flow and weather. Right now they are up the river.

I have found the most a couple miles up river in clearer water along the channel in 13' to 23' suspended about 5'- 6'. As the water warms these fish will move shallow, very soon.

Canyon Lake crappie from 4/3/14
I know Canyon Lake is not known for its fishing, rather its recreational activities. I know how hard it is to catch fish on the lake...it fishes different than South Texas lakes and the use of electronics is critical to finding good fishing locations. I have people contact me all the time saying they have fished the lake many times and never catch anything so don't think there are not fish in the lake. I am having a fish fry for our Sunday school class and needed some more filets so went out yesterday by myself for crappie. I landed over 30 and kept only those 10 1/2" and longer. I brought home 18...all blacks except for 1 white. Only two females and you can see in the photo that one was the white and she has a bloody tail, the first of the season. Water temperatures hit 70 degrees where I fished yesterday. The one female white was the only fish I caught in shallow water and all others were in 13' to 27' and suspended about 5' to 6' down along the river. Trolling is not the answer if you want to catch and not just burn gas. all these were caught on jigs.
