If you need to run longer line length than your rod, you can always use a swivel to stop the planer board.

For boards with release clips that is true. Some of the smaller boards don't use releases so they aren't made to slide down the line easily.

    Default Line behind planer board

You can put as much line as you want behind the board but the more line out behind the board means you may/will have to remove the board to get the fish to the boat or have a long handled net. I use 8-10' long rods so if I have to put more line out behind the board than the length of the rod, I'll just long line as it's easier for me that way.

I fished Tellico on Saturday as well, and I pulled one board just messing around with something for a little bit, but all the fish I saw were too deep to use boards IMO, so I just long lined over creek channels/beds.
Heeey...I have some planer boards, but haven't used them yet. I seen your post here on this, and got to wondering how deep is to deep to use the boards?
Looks like if you wanted to get deeper with the boards, you add more weight?, but then again how much weight. The boards and long lining get my brain twisted, but I know they work great...
    Good Fishing...

No rule on how deep is too deep. If you can get the lure down to the fish, that's all that matters. As stated above, some use 1/8's under boards and catch fish. Just need to find out what the fish want on that particular day. I sometimes run double jigs under the boards to get a bit deeper and catch fish.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.
