    Default Newbie Question

Ok so last weekend when my buddy was in town he said that come March the crappie will move shallower to spawn, is this based on time of year or based on the weather, Reason I ask is I moved here last March and it was still cold as heck with the Air temp in the 30's. Thanks!

If I may be of assistance - CRAPPIE (Article #4 Water Temperature and Crappie) - check under the heading "LOCATION GUIDELINES".

It also has to do with the length of daylight hours changing ( starting to get a little longer) and it triggers there pituitary gland and gets them in a spawning mode
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

They can say what they want about the temps and movements but our biggest crappie here in SC tend to spawn from mid February to the middle of April. You will find the smaller crappie spawning up to May. In January I start pulling jigs in the 20 to 30' depths

It doesn't hurt to check the back waters if you can get to them. Crappie seem to be changing their spawning times, I know water temp and daylight hours has a lot to do with the spawn but we are finding crappie running to the shallows sooner that they should be over the last three years. Whites and Blacks don't spawn at the same time so you will find spawning crappie all spring. Can't catch em setting on the couch so go every chance you get.

I've actually followed the larger crappie from deeper water during the morning/mid day hours to the backs of the creeks in the latter afternoon hours as the sun heats up the shallows quicker than the deeper waters. I'd say the spawning fish will start early March and it can last thru May if you have whites and blacks in your lakes.

The two biggest crappie I've ever caught, (both around 2lb. 10 oz. ) came in less than 6 fow in February. Don't catch many on the banks in February, but when I do they are usually good ones. For numbers in the shallows, mid march is usually the best. Some years I catch them shallow into May, but usually about over in April. I normally fish Clarks Hill and Greenwood.
