The transducer can "age" over time due to the ping vibration causing the connection to loosen slightly..... only way to tell is to try your unit with another transducer .... maybe if you know someone else you can test your unit with their setup.

Ive got another question. Do the mega and helix units come with a high speed 2d transducer also ? Reason I was asking because I was going to sell my 998 if I get 1 & still want to be able to read depth and such on plane

MEGA units come stock with the XM 9 20 MSI T (MEGA) xducer (can be used as high speed but very challenging to get it to read on plane) ...

The same XNT 9 20 (transom) or XP 9 20 (shoot thru) used for high speed on previous core units can be used with the MEGA unit ...

The MEGA units require a different Y cable when using a 2nd xducer for high speed (MSIDB Y cable) ...

The AS SIDBY Cable from the 998 will not work correctly with a MEGA unit - MEGA units must use the MSIDB Y cable ...

If the switch you are referring to is the HB TS3 Switch - it will not work correctly with the MEGA units ...

The HB TS3 Switch has no wire channel for the dedicated DI piezo in the MEGA xducer ...

Upon further research. Ive seen people saying the the mega is more for the DI quality. Im wondering if the 12 chirp non mega will be more bang for my bucks. I dont really use the di as much as I use my SI or 2d and maps

While the DI is greatly improved on the Mega units, it's nowhere near "more" for the DI. The SI imaging is also a pretty phenomenal game changer .... ask swf1960 which one he likes better.
