While the 2D sonar is a circular cone shaped beam, the DI is a very thin slice front to back, but 45 to 75 degrees to the side depending on the frequency used and whether setting is wide or narrow.

So, the fish you see on DI could be quite a bit off to the side depending on water depth and settings.

Some absolutely swear by the fish ID on the Humminbirds.....One of them is Wayne P, and not many know more about using their units than he does.
I don't use it much, but am going to start using it more.

I didn't use fish ID much until I read the post about it over at bbcboards.net. I am not a member there so I can't readily find the post to give you a link. If you will find and read it...and look at his images I think you will turn fish ID on and leave it on.

    Regards

Have to remember the number you see for the fish is the distance he is from the transducer. If he is right under you then that is also the depth he is at, but if he is way off to the side he could be several feet higher in the water.

That will be alright. It will probably be swept away in the spring when the lake floods!
