"Fish icons" on a 2d image are pretty useless IMHO .... they could just as easily be a wad of baitfish reflecting a strong enough signal to fool the 2d processor into thinking it's all one fish. (program bases icon size on return signal strength)

Of course then I have to admit that I don't care much for 2d capabilities on ANY unit. I think it's a waste of screen space and processing resources. I also don't care much for the green/yellow color palette, and prefer the blue ... but that's just personal preference.

If you tell us what unit you're using, there may be others that have differing opinions due to more experience with that (or similar) unit. I use a Lowrance Elite 5 DSI (DI only) unit, & this is the type of screen images I'm used to seeing on it :

On the DI image, it does look like there may be more than one size fish....and from the shape of the bait ball, it looks like the bait could be under attack.....It could be a mix of bait and crappie.
Some absolutely swear by the fish ID on the Humminbirds.....One of them is Wayne P, and not many know more about using their units than he does.
I don't use it much, but am going to start using it more.

That blue color indicates the fish are in the 83Khz beam, not the 200Khz beam. This means they are further off to the side.

If they were in the 200Khz beam they would be orange.

Also, in respect to 2d, the fish that show to be directly above and below each other can actually be scattered through out the cone at that point in time.
