2d is a cone shaped sonar ping

DI is a narrow fan shaped sonar ping

Both register the image as X number of feet "deep" ... when, in reality, X number of feet is a measurement of distance from the transducer to the object, regardless of where it is within the cone or fan shaped sonar ping.

Thanks that pic helps alot. Mine is on my pontoon so just trying to feel out how far out to the side of the boat it goes. Also got some marker bouys and figured when I see something just toss out there and fish about 15 feet around it is goino to be my plan.
