    Default Sonar Quiz #20

Many color sonar units these days offer several 2d palettes to choose from...

The colors entailed in each Palette choice mean something more than to just make pretty sonar images...

Here is the HB Original Palette as an example...

What factor(s) dictate which color in the chosen Palette scheme get "painted" on each pixel (or group of pixels)...??

In the image you posted from strongest to weakest returns. Red, yellow, green and blue. The red indicates a hard bottom or more dense object so more of the sonar signal is returned than a softer bottom or possibly a smaller fish. The blue is soft, more of the signal is absorbed and less is returned.

Also fish closer to the center of the cone producer stronger returns than fish of the same size near the edges.

But what dictates the strength of the sonar returned to the transducer?

The density of the object would be the first then the distance from the td.

Good question Greg but isn't that like asking what is Humminbird's program or algorythm?...LOL Primarily wouldn't it be size or density of target and where it is in relation to the beam pattern

    Uhhh, programming, algorithms???
I have no knowledge of that Senator… LOL!

You guys are right: distance from transducer, location within the sonar beam, density of object and its size but let’s not forget the shape of the object and its orientation to the transducer. A Crappie that is on its side would reflect back more sonar than one that is swimming normally (body is vertical to transducer). Remember that the transducer is looking down from above which is why sometimes your jigs may show up and sometimes they won’t.
