Rickie,if your facing the dam, these are the ones at the west end.i guess that gate 1 would be nearest to the turbines.that would make these 15 - 24

I read an old copy of a book written about the Ky Dam Project...(I don't even remember the name of the book)...
The book indicated some of the coffer dam cells were left in place because they would pose no navigation hazard at normal water pool levels...
The book also read that the dam was built in 3 stages....
1. Lock and powerhouse
2. Gates 1-14
3. Gates 15-24
The Tennesse River had to be "redirected" before each of the 3 stages of construction...
I'm not sure which of the 3 construction "stages" these coffer dam cells are left from...
Hey kosmo....which gates are these coffer dam cells in front of...??

I guess that would make sense then...the coffer dams around 15-24 would have encompassed the last last stage of construction ...and they just left them there ...(probably to save money on the project ...beings as they were not navigational hazards)...
Seems like I remember the book saying they removed the first few cells (6 or so of the cells)...that attached to gate 14 for the complete enclosure of stage 3...
kosmo...do you have a shot of the very last coffer cell to the East of that line of cells... to see how many cells were removed from the last east cell to where the line of cells would have attached to gate 14...??

Rickie, I'm pretty sure that's the down river side of the dam.
I agree ...from the way the concrete vertical wall looks...
But it still seems that the pic could have been taken looking East at the completed end of gate 14 (end of "stage 2"...and coffer cell construction of "stage 3")...with the coffer cells to the left being downstream (North) of gate 14....
BTW...the pic did not indicate for sure that this was gate 14...I'm just guessing from the layout of the items in the pic...

In the 1940s, the construction of nearby Kentucky Dam by the Tennessee Valley Authority brought plentiful electric power that led to many industrial plants, mostly chemical manufacturers, to locate between the city and the Tennessee River. Merchant Luther Draffen was instrumental in attracting the dam and industrial plants. (I agree ith justin, the picture you doesn't look to be part of the coffer
