Never fished Tawas Lake. Yes Wixom is a pretty big lake with a lot of places to hold crappie. Right now the canals and back bays are the ticket. Of course the water is so muddy that the bait had better be right in front of the fish or they will probably not see it. I fish both arms of Wixom regularly since I live on the lake, and find crappies in a lot of different areas.
It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D

It is called catching. I will always carry waxies or redworms to tip a jig or hook with. I do catch and grease and release my Gills and Crappie in Lake Cisco.

Tried waxworms for the first time a couple of weeks ago. They worked real good that day. All my prior experience has been with crickets.

I used to catch crickets as a kid. Nowdays, no local bait stores carry them and I have to catch em' myself.

Waxworm worked great fishing the beds. Caught limit 2 day straight this weekend, all 8"+ males on waxies. Females that were caught were a lot smaller than males.
When not working the beds and only catching smaller bluegills on the waxies, I switch over to cricket or minnow to catch the bigger ones.
