I've never used braid before but am contemplating doing so.
I am assuming (maybe incorrectly) that many braid users may also use some type of backing to partially fill their spools. If so, I was wondering what lines y'all are using for your backing.
I will most likely will be spooling a 1000 size spinning reel with 2# Fireline Crystal for casting 1/64 & 1/32 oz Jigs, if that is of any significance.
Appreciate any info you may have to offer.
I spool 65 yards of what ever line I am using. Put backing on spool to be sure the spool is full. Been doing it for years.

yes 1/2 or a bit better full mono rest braid.
No backing for me. My personal reasoning is this. I only change my spool out about every 3 years. When I do change I only peel it all off and respool it with the unused line at the top now and the old stuff next to the spool. That bottom stuff is as good as new stuff.

I don't on my line counter reels that have braid, but I do on my casting rod that has braid ... and since it's a spinning reel, I use old mono for backing so that the whole spool of line won't slip around on the reel spool when under heavy pull pressure. Also, like Silverside, I pull off all the braid about every 3yrs or so & reverse reel it back on so I have fresh un-faded braid (I use hi-vis braid on my casting rod).

So for those that are using mono backing, do you try to approximate the diameter of the braid with the mono, or just use whatever old mono you have laying around, as long it is not too large a diameter?
I use backing, just a cheap Berkley Big Game mono, 12 lb or so - it's recommended so that the braid doesn't clamp down so tight on the spool, the mono backing on the spool builds in some "give"
I fill the spool about halfway or so with mono, then add the braid. After about 3 years or so, I peel all the braid off, then spool it back on the other way/flip it around so that I end up with another 3 years out of it.
You shouldn't be casting the mono, nor should it be spooling out through your guides, so size really doesn't matter.Quote:

All good info. I like using smaller line just in case I do get into the backing. Double uni knot for the join.

All my spinning reel got backing. I use 4-8lb braid which take little to no room so backing is a must. I don’t fish a lot of brush pie so not ton of snag for me, one full spool of line should last me a few seasons, so I only use 75yds (1/2 filler spool). Another reason is once the line get low on spool I wanna be able to add more backing material to get it to full spool again (maximum casting distance), the 75yds would be a lot easier to do so compare to 150yds. Even my shallow spool still got almost 1/2 of backing. So if you plan to use #2 or #4 Fireline as mainline, you might need 2/3 spool of backing. I use line counter to make sure I got about 200’ of line. I use 4 or 6lb mono as backing using double uni knot to join. I also use plumbing tape to wrap over knot and also act my backing material if I need more.
Been putting on cheap mono backing for years after braid made the scene. But I do it differently than above.
I pull off a casting distance of braid + 10' extra on land (driveway). Spool the mono to where I think the line will be connected to the braid.
Double uni knot the braid to mono and reel in the braid. Overfill? Pull out the braid and cut some of the mono off.
No point in keeping braid past a certain point and therefore change it in 2 years unless too much line was lost from snags.
^^This is what I do too. I go maybe 2 years per end and trim back any frays or rough spots as needed. I replace my fluorocarbon leaders every other trip or as needed.Quote:

I like to use a couple of turns of electrical tape and a drop of super glue to prevent the braid from spinning on the spool... and like others have said:
When I re-spool, I'll leave about 1/3 of the old braid on the reel... cut it cleanly as possible... and tie the new braid onto it using a double uni-knot.
I too use a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader depending on whether I want the leader to float freely or sink based on the lure or presentation.
