I’ve decided to switch to braid and I’m curious what size everyone is using ? I plan to use it on all my rods. Casting, spider rigging and trolling rods. I’m a spider wire guy and so far been thinking about 10lb. Opinions? Much appreciated!

I like 12lb Sunline best but use 15-20lb quite a bit for dedicated jigging rods.

I use 10lb power pro and can straighten hooks when hung without breaking off. I’d go 10#.

20 lb kastking. A bit larger so it doesn't get embedded in the spool of line - seems to reel more smoothly.

I use 20 # braid. I buy it direct from China, my last spool of 3000 yards cost me $20, which included shipping. I had to wait a month to receive it but I can't tell any difference between it and the more expensive name brands. 3000 yards last a very long time. I fish most days. :)
braid has it's problems, the biggest one for me is remembering to tighten the eye of the jig or hook when I tie a new one on. The braid I use is so thin that it will sometimes slip through the space in the eye when fighting a fish if you forget to tighten the eye with pliers to remove the gap. I've lost some nice fish through that memory lapse.Quote:

Speaking of hang-ups and if you are new to braid be sure to have a piece of wood or something to wrap around the line to pull it out of hang-ups. Do not use your hand!! You will regret it.
Most of my rods now carry a braid/fluro combo.
For Striper and bass I use 20# braid and 12# fluro.
For crappie and perch i use 14# braid and 8# f!uro.
A couple of my lighter panfish ones have 6# braid and 4# plain mono.
After dozens of combinations I've found thus the simplest and easiest
I personally don’t see the appeal to braid... yes it’s stronger, and smaller, and you can get more on a spool.... but if the main reason for using it is to save an inexpensive jighead by having a strong enough line to pull the whole brush pile up and disrupt the habitat... idk... I think I’ll stick with my mono. Leave the brush alone, break off the jig and keep fishing the pile. I suppose I can see using it for pulling cranks, because those are more expensive and hurt more to lose, but on jigging and casting poles I’ll stick with mono. To each his own.

I use Kast King 12# braid for all my Crappie needs.

I like 10#-4# Berkely Crystal as I do lot of line watching and the white is very easy to see. Feels a little stiff when first put on but once used a bit it gets limp like sewing thread.
I use 8# Gloss with an8# flouro leader. I use it because it is super small diameter. An older man commented to me before I switched to braid that my line looked like well rope. He had his limit, I didn't. His experience won out.

10lb test 2 lb diameter power pro is what I have on my jig poles. I use a 4-6 lb test fluoro leader on these poles too.
Good question. Anyone use 8# Gliss? Is it as thin as the webpage says? It is stiff?
for me, one big factor using 6# braid/ 4# mono is I can cast a small beetle spin or jig at least 30-50% futher than plain 6# monoQuote:

Appreciate the responses, I’ll go with my original plan of 10# for my casting rods and spider rigging rods. I’ll go a little heavier on my trolling rods mostly because I also use them for walleye.

I use the flurocarbon leader because it wears better. I broke off 2 nice Stripers with braid tied directly to spoon.
Also fluro is stiffer and your lures don't tend to wrap or foul like they do on the braid tied direct to lute. This is especially true on small lures nd jigs.
I tie the braid directly to the fluro using back to back uniknots. I've yet to have one break and it's super easy to tie.
Yes. that's true... the thread like braid is a pain to get undone then it wraps around small crankbait or beetle spin, I alway use a 18in mono leader to prevent that.Quote:

I have used 4 to 10 lbs braid for jigging since itcame out . Mostly Fireline and Sufix. Last 2 years I have switched to Sufix Adavnced Mono. Low stretch , good knots and the cost is way less.
According to the fluro folks, theirs is more abrasive resistant. Frankly I think we splitting hairs at that point. I use 4# mono on my lightest rig mainly because i have 10 miles of the stuff.Quote:

Daiwa "MoreThan12" Braid pretty much did away with all the downfalls of previous braid....it is a small 12 strand tight braid with a silicon coating that doesn't wear off.
I am using 13lb for Crappie, and 22lb for Walleye and Bass!
I've always kept up with braid technology and this one is Perfect!
