Jumping oil into the Lake
What's that gonna do to the fishing?
where at in conway
Somewhere down at mayflower. There ain't many details on the news site right now.
It'll be some greasy fish.
Where are you guys reading this at? Can't find anything on it.
It's the swampy area right off of the Mayflower exit.
South of 89, East of 40.
So I am told...
Hopefully they can keep in contained in that small area.
I pulled my truck over.. I thought I had a bearing slinging grease!
It was the oil spill I was smelling!
MAYFLOWER, Ark. (KTHV) - The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management is currently responding to an oil spill.
According to public information officer Brandon Morris, a crude oil pipeline, owned by Exxon, ruptured near Mayflower, and now some of the oil is leaking into Lake Conway.
The Faulkner County Judge has declared this an emergency; Mayflower Chief Bob Satkowski said the nearby Northwood subdivision off Highway 89 North has been evacuated. Satkowski said there is a noticeable aroma in the air near the incident.
The amount of oil that has leaked is unknown. THV 11 has a crew on the way to the scene and will provide more information as it becomes available.
I hear they're bringing in the Deep Water Horizon bunch to plug it.
Hopefully someone was smart enough to put a some kind of plug on that pipe that drains into the lake from that swampy area.....
Hmmm, "crude" crappie!!
Surely there is a valve close by to shut that off!
Lends a whole new meaning to the words "black crappie!" :yikes Surely someone will have enough sense to plug the leak, plug the lake, or contain the slick to keep it from getting to the main lake!!
All they need now is a big rain before in get in lake. news said it was in small creek with none in the lake
Maybe D10 can come on and give us a update and give us the full scoop.
That sucks. Hope they get er contained and the leak stopped so it don't end up like our spill back in 2010 that screwed up miles of the Kalamazoo river system even still.
840000 gallons of oil leak into creek | WOOD TV8
No wonder folks have been getting skunked the last couple days the fish are full of oil! Hope they get it contained.
Just got back from the Lake Conway. I figured that there was some chatter on here about the oil leak. What I know is that a pipe line about 2.5 miles up stream of Lake Conway ruptured some time late this afternoon. The oil made it down a small ditch to a creek that feeds the wetland above the tributary that enters Lake Conway south of Highway 89. OEM and other crews has set up oil booms and check dams beneath the access road in the wetland. So far this has contained the oil to the the edge of the wetland. In addtion to this, the colverts that run under highway 89 to Lake Conway have been plugged up. Crews will continue to monitor the situation for the foreseable future. As of now no oil has made it into Lake Conway. I will be up early in the morning monitoring the situation. So I will not be available for further coments tonight.
That's sounds like a man all over the situation right there. Thanks for posting what you know it isn't required but much appreciated.
Yessir, thanks for the info and harf work.

Thanks for the update.
Close call... Hopefully they caught the leak in time. A bad situation for residents in that area.
Thanks for the response and reply D10, please keep us up to date and informed. Once again thanks for the info.
We know you didn't hafta do this but we all thank you for your time and consideration in posting this report, D10. :HandsClapping Lotsa folks anxious and concerned on here, and we all appreciate the information. Keep us posted, if you can. Thanks again from a lot of interested crappie fishermen.
Just back home from inspecting the site. The cleanup crews placed more booms down stream of the previous ones that they set last night, Unfortunatly some of the oil (a small amout) is finding its way past the booms. However, this should all be contained to the part of the wetland/lake that is south of Highway 89. The blocked culverts that goes under Highway 89 should keep any oil from reaching the main body of the lake. THey have also placced booms on the north side of Highway 89 in case the water tops the road due to the blocked culverts. It would take approximately 4 inches of rain to do this though. There will be a town meeting at 2:00pm today at the Mayflower Highschool if anyone is interested on getting additional information. That is it for now.
Several years ago my uncle had a fuel oil leak that got into his 5 acre lake. Did not kill many fish but they tasted of oil for 3 years. Hope the size of the lake dilutes any that makes it in!
I had this photo texted to me of the oil leak. Doesn't look good.

Lots of government money I'm sure no need for Exxon to she'll out any cash!
Just drove past there on I-40. All I know is what I see from the freeway. Lots of equipment, an Exxon Mobil Emergency Response Unit, whatever that is........people everywhere.......and the smell of oil just driving down the freeway is almost enough to make you choke. I'm sure they are doing what they can.
Wife's cousin's kid, used to live in this area.......moved to Greenbrier.....put pictures of her old house........oil in streets, up to the house, really bad. Not sure how that'd ever clean up.
Exxon is going to shell out a pile of cash over this...............and I have no idea the ecological mess it's causing yet........
whew. Big mess........
Very extremely bad deal here. Folks moved from their primary residence indefinitely and oil flowing down roads is in the unacceptable category. Seems like there must have been a way to prevent such a disaster with routine testing otherwise the EPA wouldnt allow the initial install so to me I feel like somebody was negligent which will be a sticky point for exxon when the time comes.
Thanks DeeTen.
Any updates on this situation?
The oil is still contained to the wetland/cove south of highway 89. They have been pumping water out of this area into the lake in preparation for the up comming rains that we may get. I have been assured that the water they are pumping is hydrocarbon free. People are starting to find oil soaked ducks and turtles. If you find an animal that looks like it has been contaminated with oil from Lake Cownay, please call 1-800-876-9291.
I've looked at the pictures of this mess on Yahoo. What a mess. That will be a lot of dirt moved. Hope the get this cleaned up quickly.
Drove through Friday night on my way home from Greers Ferry. Smelled oil and pulled over to see if I had blown a seal on the trailer axle. As soon as I got out of the truck, I could tell it wasn't me.
What a mess!
Lots of good info here.
Man what a mess
The oil is still contained to the wetland/cove/bay that is south of highway 89. You may have seen an interview where the Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said that the oil is in Lake Conway. He is interperating that the area that is south of Highway 89 is Lake Conway. Technically speaking it is, but it is not part of Lake Conway propper. We do not want the public thinking that oil is in the main lake. There will be an interview on ch. 4, 7, and 11 that addresses this issue at 5:00pm tonight (in 30 minutes). Today I got a look at the lab results from the water qualtiy testing and to date there is no abnormalities on the north side of Highway 89. Today they have started clearing out the buckbrush so that they could begin physically removing reminants of the oil. Hopefully this proccess will not take too long.
