Boats out of commision for a while.

While jumping waves up at lake st. John last week I guess I popped a few rivits on the transome. When loading the boat I noticed 2 near the motor mounts that were sticking out some also. The boat is a 1986 model and when I switched the motor out last year i probably should have don this, but hindsight is 20/20. So I have all stainless panhead screws/washers/locknuts, bling rivits and some 3m 5200 coming in next week. So the weekend project is getting everything stripped off and cleaned.

I am going to be putting 3/4" exterior plywood back in there. Gojng to buy it today and let it bake over the weekend to dry it. Then epoxy it together to make 1.5" and seal it again with epoxy. Pre-drill my holes and fill them with epoxy. Then attempt to re-assemble it all. With all of the stuff I have to remove I will only have about 3" of welding on each side to tie in the corner caps to the gunnels.

I dont know how long I will be having this boat but at least I know it will last for a long time.

Any of you guys out there have any sugestions or experience doing this.

Make sure you get the bottom sealed extra good under the lip where the Plywood is joined ... I had those Little tiny Black Ants my Grandmother Called Sugar Ants make their home in the Side Boards on my Boat trailer --- until it was eaten up --- the only way I know would be to stand the Boat up till the Transom was flat to allow Everything to cure and not run out from between the Plywood... My Grandpaws barn is over 120 years old could hoist it rite up and let you work in the shade

Left work early to, well just to leave. But I did get most of the demo done. Having a tractor to take the motor off helps. For got to take before pics but I did take some. The boart was pretty rotten, the bottom was as if termites ate it but i know it was just rotten. Lots and lots of cleaning to go this weekend. I'll try to take more pics as I go. You can now bond two pieces together then install in the Transom .. a good Vaccium will get those scrapings out of the crack

It will be better than new when you get through

cut all the foam back away from the Plywood area -- Foam gets waterlogged and will keep moisture at the wood

Ok. Lots of cleaning done today. All of the wood chips (aka mulch) are gone. Removed the aluminum bottom angle piece also. Cut enough foam out to get under the angle piece and put stainless bolts instead of rivits. Wire brushed and cleaned with alcohol then did it a few more times.

The board that came out was 1&1/4" or at least verry close. I purchased a sheet of 19/32. So the finished piece will be 1/16thinner. I may get some fiberglass cloth and sandwich it in between the boards and then put a outer layer also. Either way 1/16 thimner will be way stronger than it was.
Back to today, the plywood is drying in my barn until the hardware comes in later this week. I'll cut it to 5 foot then split it to make 5x2. Epoxy the pieces together and let it set up then mark and cut and fit it in the boat. Attachment 305466Attachment 305467

Not much progress to show today. I laminated the plywood together. I also riveted the support in place. I dont know if I like the rivits there so I may drill them back out and put screws in there with some 3m 5200.

Those are some special rivits. They are sealed so it wont leak, but I want it to pull the bracket tight as i can get it.

In the morning before work I am going to remove the screws and flip my plywood.

Hopefully I will get to cut it to size and mark holes and seal it tomorrow.
