Welcome to the world of fishing, I have been catcing fish just off of structure in deeper water (8 - 12 ft) using jigs. If you can find someone in your area on the creek they may be able to give you some tips (some guys will, some won't) best of luck to you.

Welcome to the world of fishing. It might help improve the advise you get if you would post the rod and reel and line you are using.

    Default hey FISHER...

I dont know bout yer lakes or creeks where yer at but I do know Crappie...
be assured that Crappie want GOOD WOOD......

they'll hold tite to it & bite when the water truns cooler and baro pressure is low...
they'll also hold to it & lockjaw when water is cool and baro is high....

even though they lockjaw dont even think the wont pass up an easy meal,,
they're jus like lil kids.. all they do is eat & poop.....

just my opinion..... and that proven opinion werks,,,I don't get skunked nor will I..............

    Default brush or timber

Try main lake brush or timber any where from 10 to 20 ft or just look around and see what other boats are doing.

    Welcome from Alabama.

    Fishing tip

    Selecting Jig Colors
    General rules

    1. In clear water, use
    clear jigs.
    2. In dark water, use
    dark jigs and dark
    combinations of colors.
    3. If it’s muddy, use
    dark jigs.
