    Default Help !


    Fished several hours on the Chowan today , caught one keeper yellow perch and two very small gills...................... (caught in very shallow water)
    Need some help from you more experienced fishermen, where to find them ? Where do they go? do they just not bite? Why do the ice fishermen catch them when water temps drop ?
    I fished deep, shallow , close to cover, and in middle of river(no cover).....
    Another fellow taking his boat out said he didn`t even get a bite, first time he had never caught anything there .................

    From now till about the end of January is my favorite time of the year for gills. I always look for deeper water near their spawning grounds. The fish are there, and they will hit.

    It is difficult to identify one single reason they didn't bite for you it sounds like you fished every way you could and needed to. I am no professional but there are times they just won't bite no matter what you do.

    When it is cold fish just move to deeper water. If you find deeper water with structure of a breakline you will usually find fish. Many ice fishermen use a hand crafted pinmin, but you can use this technique year round. The improtant thing is to have confidence in whatever technique you are using and to fish it slower than you presently are. Keep the bait at or slightly above the level of the fish. I tip mine with a waxworm for additional triggering qualities.

    there is a lake close to my house that will not give up any fish anywhere around the full moon, especially crappie. could be the case where you fish.
