i have been having a hard time catching any fish besides catfishs at a pond near me i have tried worms/crickets/nightcrwlers/catwaba..and never got anything at this pond they worked great in the neuse river and capefear river though.
my target fish was bream and i was using this setup.
ngage-r2f-120/sp rod/reel combo bought at walmart
a new bait i never heard called berkley Gulp! maggot/asticots white
i caught 5 fish in less than 15mins..using this bait in a jar..i was stunned to say the least..is this normal for this maggot bait or was today just a lucky day?
will this bait work like this everytime i go fishing or was this a fluke?
the time was around 7:30pm if it matters.
what would be a good time to catch em? i dont plan on keeping any of them though i always C&R all the fish i catch regardless of what it is..
sorry for going on and on but i had a good time fishing today even if it was brief stupid mosquito's...

Personally, if fishing for Bream or even goggle eyed sunfish, I would use the Berkley Gulp products ONLY AFTER my supply of wax worms run out. It is their scent and shape that fools the fish and does a descent job, but a real wax worm will always outfish them IMHO.
The key is your presentation and your confidence in a bait. Slow it down and you'll get more bites.

Live bait will outfish any thing berkley makes every time. Not to say that they dont have good products, I have a jar of maggots myself that I keep just in case I run out of live bait. Crickets, wax worms, or good ole' garden worms will always catch brim.
I agree with all post but I'm curious to know what a ( catwaba ) is?
does not surprise me one bit, I use nothing but artificial and catch as many or more than the guys using live bait. the berkley maggots and the berkley power wigglers are two of my favorite for gills and specks. they even work well on yellow perch, smallmouth, and several other species
It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D
In the south we have Catwaba trees that a type of Catapiller loves to eat. During certain times of the summer the Catapillers will devour the folage on these trees and the little critters are excellent Bream bait. I just pick them off the tree, put them in a container and use them like I would a worm or cricket. They may grow up north too, I don't know.

You ain't kidding they like them. I cleaned a bunch yesterday that were full of them. Also, Rebel makes a cat-r-crawler crankbait that gills love. It looks just like them.
Are you guy's talking about a cataphal tree? I'm not sure of the spelling,If you'all are right or me. If so I have 2 in my back yard and have been using them for year's.The worm is black with yellow line's from one end to the other. They are great catfish bait also.
Heres a sight that I found from someone who markets them. I noticed that there are different spellings for the samething. No matter how you spell them, their great bait.
