I usually go point in on the chest right under the head, but above the legs. Go down throught the cricket and back out under the legs toward the tail.Originally Posted by Allstate48

They have kind of a hard "plate" that the legs all join into and this kind of helps them stay on.

I use a #6 short shank hook and thread the cricket from the tail and push the point of the hook through the head. This has worked pretty well for the last 45 years or so.

I just started fresh water fishing again recently but that's how i did it when i was a kid.

I use #8 hooks which is very near the size of the crickets. I generally just hook them through the tails and use very light tackle so as the fish doesn't notice the weight. In general, this combination makes for an aggressive enough attack, that it doesn't matter how the cricket is hooked, you usually end up hooking the fish.

i thread them on through the butt and bring the hook point out just under the head.

through the back end is where i hook em i just dont go to far towards the head i want them to really be alive i think its an action thing and also i like floating them with no split shot or float and watching those gills come off the nest and blast them even if you dont hook up on the fish its always fun watching top water action

the same type the pet store has just the big ones they sell is about the size most bait shops have
but if you want to use the big black ones i dont see why they wouldnt work
