Try both, most times I use a slow steady retrieve if the bait already has a tail. With a Trout Magnet, no curly or paddle tail, I use a twitching method. I do know that White Bass prefer the erratic twitching and actually a jerky type retrieve, the sudden action makes them think the bait is about to get away. Taught many a person fishing from the bank that an aggressive retrieve for the line sides will flat put them in the bucket. Good luck and report back what works for your neck of the woods.
