Always have your weight on the bottom of your main line. Never above the hook, unless you are fishing for bass with a plastic worm, (split shotting). I use a medium sized split shot below the hook that is up 1 to 2 feet above the weight. It's a modified drop shot rig. Instead of having the hook tied directly to the main line, I have it out on a short 10 to 12 inch leader of the same weight as my main line (2 to 4 lb test). I use this primarily as a bait rig while moving along slowly in a float tube or boat. If you get the split shot hung up, just pull on the line and the weight will just slide off. Split shots are cheap.
