Winter gill
Weather today was overcast , low 50’s, with occasional drizzle .
My brother and I visited the WMA gun range first thing when we arrived this morning , but soon gave up on trying to keep our guns dry from the mist blowing in on us .
So we decided to wet a line if the heavy stuff stayed away . And it did . We got in a couple of hours before lunch time .
We most threw beetlspins , and roadrunners and got skunked .
I was fishing my 5’6” St Croix Triumph UL paired with a 2000 Series Daiwa reel spooled with two pound P-Line .
I had been fishing with a tiny safetypin type lure using a Gold Trout Magnet Head with a Bison body .
I was about to give up and go find some fried chicken , when I remembered I’d wanted to try casting the Trout Magnet by itself . Rigging up my first cast surprised me , about 20-25 yards . I let the jig fall for a count of 10 and slowly lifted the jig and started to wind . When the slack got out of the line , I felt a tap . I pulled back , but nothing . It felt good to at least get a nibble .
My next cast , right back in the same area and I left it drop trying to keep the slack out . As I started to wind , I felt another tap, swept my rod to the right and hooked up with the gill below . Made my day . I continued to fish the area for another ten minutes or so and caught two more , just a little smaller than the first .
Wished I’d figured out what to do before it was time to go . I’ll be ready next trip .
Fishing from shore in the winter and be a hit or miss thing , just like the weather .

That's for sure. One day you're filling the bucket. The next you're going home empty. Our Walmart doesn't carry trout magnets but they have those crappie magnet popeyes. When them bulls are biting they love black.

Congrats on your catch. Here in TN winter Gills are pretty easy to get....if you have a boat. They will stack up below the dams here by the thousands. The only thing for me is I hate fishing in the cold....or I should say I don’t like being uncomfortable in the cold. It can be 45 degrees...bright sunshine....and zero wind....and I will go. It can even be in the 30’s with the same conditions and I will go. But any wind at all with colder temps and I stay home....LOL. I don’t really consider myself old.....pushing 70.....but in the past few years just can’t or won’t deal with it. All of my Gills are caught using Trout Magnets.

If it is in the spring, summer, and fall I will use the TM jig head at 1/64 ounce. In winter...or heat of summer....when they go deep I will use a ball head jig with a #8 hook 1/24-3/32. I never fish the Trout Magnet with anything heavier than a 3/32. And they have to be deep to use that. The lighter you can keep your jig head weight the better. This past Thursday I had around 50-60 brook trout like in the pic using the Bison colored. BullDog is also a great color for Gills.

I love those crappie magnet Popeyes. I caught an 11.5" bluegill on a black 1/16oz one tipped with a white crappie nibble.
Its at the taxidermist now. My first mount...

On the Caney Fork.....the best trout stream in the nation not many have heard about. Also full of black nose crappie.....not to mention huge brown trout. I was twitching and they were crushing it. I’ve had a lot of 100 fish days up there. May hit it again day after Christmas or go below Nickajack to fish for the Gills....tough choice.....LOL.
