Hot dogs may work on small bluegill but I have personally found the big ones to be more selective than that. For example, I can catch small bluegill all day on Gulp, but have never caught any hogs on it. Live bait such as red wigglers or crickets is generally best for the big ones. Use as little weight as necessary to get the bait down to where the fish are. Oftentimes a slow-sinking (i.e. not much weight) presentation can mean the difference between fish and no fish.

I prefer crickets but I am with tnpondmanager on the lite as possible approach. There are times that I throw worms with no weight at all.

what kind of pattern do you fellas figure the bluegill to be on when the water temp is in the high 40's like it seems to be in the next couple weeks here in Indiana

Cford, until your water warms up a little more, the big ones will likely be pretty deep. I would look for them near drop-offs that allow access to some of the deepest water in the lake; if you can find such a spot that's not too far from spawning grounds they should be in there thick.
