worms through the winter

I have been feeding mine cheap dry dog food for several years now. I soak the dog food...then drain it, then I dig out a small trench down the middle of my worm bed and bury the dog food. In my outside worm box I feed them this way once a week.

I used them to get my africans.Thanks a lot for the site.They were excellent,everything that they said happened right on time.They had the cheapest prices for what I was looking for.Worms all came alive and well,in three days.I even have baby africans now.Very healthy stock.Thanks.

Well there you go, G-3 has done it for a long time so it should work well. Stay with the cheap dog food though, like we are gonna spend $30 for 40# when we can get 40# for $10. lol. The more expensive stuff has a lot more meat products in them. My wife's Bull terrier eats that $38/40# bag stuff so boy do I know.

As for prices, you have to search around. For customer support, organic farms has been the best so far. I have not gotten a reply from 6-10 others in 3 weeks.

And feeding them dog food should make them really good for catfish fishing!!!

Can do either, depends on how your keeping them. Doesn't matter really unless you are keeping actual nightcrawlers which feed on the surface mainly. Composting worms will feed in and on the bedding so it doesn't matter as long as it is not compact and too hard for them to move through.

WhitePerchJerker,I keep my africans indoors.I have the bin in a closet and it is at least 70 to 75 degrees as it is next to the heater in the same wall.If it gets below 68 degrees they don't do so well.Plus I live in Arizona,it is always in thier comfort zone,that is why I got that worm for here.

I think that feeding on the top surface also lets you see how much they are eating.

Foods that you wet yourself like worm chow, chicken scratch, egg layer mash and such should be fed on top. They can sour quickly and this allows you to see what has been eaten. Foods like vegies and scraps can be fed either way but burying them under a little bedding keeps the flies away and other potential invaders. basically if you have a problem with flies bury it somehow even if it is just a piece of wet cardboard over it to keep the flies from getting to it.
