Nightcrawlers have to stay cool, under 55F. There are really large composting worms that will tolerate much higher temps. Oh and a lot of the so called nightcrawlers you buy now are not the standard ones you might get one a rainy night. Most or large composting worms or other species that can be kept at higher temps like Canadians and European worms. Most of Wallyworlds are Canadian crawlers now anyway, at least up here they are.

As for wehat to feed them, anything but citris, meat and dairy products. Any vegetable, plain paper, cardboard, coffee grounds, egg layer mash, corn meal, bread, oatmeal, potatoes, etc... But avoid cantalope and melons as they can cause a massive outbreak of mites.

    Default Worm food?

I've had several people mention that dog food is good to put in the worm box so I bought a small bag of it at Walmart (we don't have a dog) and dropped maybe 10-12 pieces in. I came back about a week later and it didn't look like they had eaten much but more disturbing, there was mold all over the food. Do I need to be grinding this up to a meal consitency? I think I'll add potato peels and some corn meal to it and see what happens...

I have my first african nightcrawler babies, first seen today. You have to grind everything up,Like a powder if possible. That way they can eat it.Worms don't have very big mouthes,ya know.I can see one of mine grabbing a piece of dogfood and pulling it under the dirt, lol.Might be a little scarey.Make sure that you grind up eggshells, too. They love it,and need it.They are like chickens, have gizzards. And it will keep the PH level right for them.

Canned food or dry food? Dry food needs to be soaked and soggy, broken up, then drained and simply put under some bedding. Personally I wouldn't use it because of all the fats and oils in it as well as the meat by products. Not the best stuff for your worms from what I have read.

Even the corn meal, oatmeal and anything else should be wet down. I keep Grindal worms for feeding tropical fish and they eat dry baby food cereal after I wet it down with a spray bottle.
