Forest fires. One of them is just west of us, but they are all over western Montana. Some of the smoke is from Washington, Oregon, and California. The rain only knocked down the smoke for one day. It's back just as heavy as ever.
Yesterday's Report
The fishing was not quite as good yesterday. The bite was extremely light and that for a fish that is known to bite light. We only caught 16 fish keeping only 8 of those. Every fish released was of legal size and all but one of the kept fish were in the 13" range with the smallest being 12.5" and the largest pushing 15". I'm not sure how I am calling that not quite as good but there it is.

Cleaned 36 released 33. Of the released fish only 3 were under 10”.
I fished with the Lone Stranger in his boat yesterday. He has a pan optics transducer for his Garmin and is pretty good with it. We find new brush piles every time we go out.
Today, being a weekend day was a work day. I worked on the Ranger boat restore project a bit. Managed to carpet a hatch, that makes two of nine finished. Also organized all the wiring in the bilge.
Bonus was that the Lone Stranger taught me how to make mini spoons out of ice blades so I poured 25 of them and poured another 100 jig hooks of various sizes.

Today’s report. Caught 58 all but 3 over 12”. Kept 16 of the biggest.

Did you get them on your new ice spoons?
No. Most were on my 1/4 oz spoons.
Fished by myself today. 19 keepers all over 12.5. 35 tossers all over 11.5”.
I forgot to mention that the reason for the spoons in plastic bags is that I use a vinyl paint.
I have to fish by myself again tomorrow :( What's the world coming to?

You never know what you will catch on a crappie jig.
Lots of fun on a crappie rod.
There were also some real fish.
24 keepers with 52 tossers. All tossers were legal fish.
I had the fish on a certain pattern for the last 3 weeks but that changed today. I guess it’s a good thing I’m not stuck doing what I’ve always done before otherwise I would not have been able to make the necessary changes in fishing technics.
4 days with out going fishing because of the long holiday weekend. My symptoms of land sickness are getting pretty strong. I may be needing both medication and professional counseling.
I understand Wrangler, baled hay all weekend.
Don’t participate on holiday weekends.

I don’t know if it was the rain or holiday lake traffic but fishing was difficult today. We fished till 2:00 pm and only caught 38. Kept only 1 under 13” bucause of a deep hook

We've been very busy haying up here, too. But we had two fields down when the rain came. One field only got a hundredth or so, but the field about ten miles away got nearly a half inch, turning some prime horse hay into cow hay. Fly fishing has been great, whenever we don't have to work (there IS an upside to having it rain). Look forward to seeing y'all this fall.
We have had a couple of difficult days. 40 yesterday and 43 today. Tired of cleaning fish so we didn’t keep any.
