Texoma has finely started dropping. They are releasing enough water to make a water clarity difference pretty much everywhere the water is moving. I still have a few places to fish and a couple different patterns that are working but the crappie are biting very light most of the time and if it is very windy at all I can't detect most bites. It's to windy today so assuming the weather forecast is accurate Monday will be my next opportunity.
I’ve had a different front blow in every day for the last several days in a row. That means I’m laying here in a pain killer induced stuper trying to remember what my name is. Fortunately for me I can’t notice any difference from any other day. :biggrin
I did luck out and found a gullible redneck to go fishing in the cold weather with me tomorrow. Maybe I’ll try acting like I don’t know how to tie a hook on and see if I can con him into re-tying for me when I break off. Someone pulled that on me and it worked for a while the other day. :biggrin

Todays efforts.
A couple of those crappie were confused at birth and turned their stripes the wrong way.
i sunk a huge cedar tree also.
It will be a solo trip tomorrow with the wind out of the south. I’m going to try my new spot where 2 creeks meet.
Nice looking catch, I'm trying to make a point to sink something on every trip that I go out this year.
I have been doing that very thing myself this year. I have sunk 6 so far this year. that makes 228 marked brush piles on my gps since last April when I installed the new Garmins.
Today was a tough day of fishing. I only had 1 in the box at 3:30 pm but kept moving and looking and had 10 at 4:15 pm. I also placed another brush pile.

Sitting at the computer and typing is a little easier than using the cell phone so I can provide more information. Since the start of the new year the bite has been very light for me. Therefore, I am only successful fishing in places that are out of the wind for now. Fortunately Texoma is a large lake and most of the time I can find places out of the wind to fish. I am still doing better fishing on the larger tree stumps I have placed but when the wind won't allow or various boat ramps are closed due to high water I can still catch fish on brushy brush which I did yesterday. Most of the time my crappie prefer the brushy brush.
Yesterday I had to look a lot before I found fish that would eat. As most of you already know I am a lure only fisherman. I still carry a cast net and at times catch small shad for guest but basically all I need is an assortment of tube jugs. While yesterday was tough, even on tough days if a person looks long enough they will eventually find feeding fish.
When I mentioned I had placed 6 now 7 brush piles this year I mean from January 1 to now. The Unknown Fisherman even helped me set one so he could see how I do it. I have already caught fish on that one and I think we sank it last Thursday. 4 of the 7 that I sunk were large Bois De Arc trees that were already floating in the lake from the recent high water. I think most people call them horse apple trees. I have caught fish on all but the last two which I have not fished yet. Those would be Monday's and Tuesdays sunken trees. I actually had a strike on the tree I sank yesterday 15 minutes after I sank it. On the other hand I have had 1 that took 3 years for me to catch my first fish off of it.
I have a growing interest in filming some of my fishing and hunting trips but have no experience in camera equipment. If any of you have helpful suggestions on where and what kind of inexpensive equip I should purchase I would appreciate the advice. The filming is for personal use so if anyone thinks I am going in competition to their youtube videos you may put those thoughts to rest. As I have mentioned before, the terms of my retirement require that I am not allowed to earn any money at all until I turn 65. I still have 5 years to go. Maybe that's why the Unknown Fisherman kept calling me junior :)
I crappie fish 12 months a year on a lake where crappie spend their entire lives running for their life from striped bass which translates to difficult crappie fishing. That being said, there is also a lot of good advice on Youtube. Some of the fisherman even go into great detail explaining what they do. I have recently started watching Youtube and have learned a few tricks I would not otherwise know.
For inexpensive recording take a look at some of the Dash/Car Cams that are out there, I have an HP F230 I picked up for about $40.00 and it's HD super clear picture; we got it for the car but I'm planning on taking it out on the boat as well, just set it up towards the back for a wide angle shot and let it run. Here is a link to some, but I did not by from here but this will give you an idea, just remember to take proper precautions since they are not water proof but they don't cost big bucks either. Also, make sure you get one that uses the mini- SD card or has HDMI connection so you can upload to you computer.Quote:

Crappie Wrangler if you decide to make some videos please share with us! I don't fish texoma and probably never will but I love reading your post when I'm at work wishing I could be fishing. If you made videos to where I could go along I may never get anything done at work [emoji38] ! Thanks for the encouragement. I figure learning how to use the equipment will be the easy part. Paying for the equipment will be the hard part.
Questions:
I viewed the ads mentioned so far and none of them actually state where the camera gets it's power source such as 12V power cord or rechargable batteries or both. Maybe I didn't read far enough.
Does the wide angle lenses distort the picture? I have seen some videos that made the fishing rods appear like willow limbs they were so distorted.
How do I mount the thing? Many look like a small box that just sits on the dash. On the other hand a tripod mount on the boat would seem in the way. Should I be looking for a body harness or hat mount of some kind?
And most importantly, can I edit or crop out back ground in the videos. As we all know, if I leave a portion of the bank showing where I am catching fish there will be 75 boats there the next day. That is why I have not considered filming before.

I also follow your posts, and most others on the Okie page. I am especially interested in the above comment because you seldom hear tube jigs mentioned on here. I have been a fan of the tube jigs since the 60's when Bobby Garland came out with the Gitzit. I've had tubes in my boat ever since then. I would be interested in your favorites...size, color, brand, etc.? I don't fish nearly as often as you and just keep enough for a couple meals because I have been on a low carb binge for awhile but I do enjoy your posts.Quote:

I have used tubes almost exclusively for over 25 years. Once a fisherman realizes that most fishing "stuff" is made to sell to fisherman instead of being made to catch fish then the list of fishing equipment needs greatly diminish. Tubes are cheap, they come in a variety of colors, and they catch fish. I have found times that a different shaped lure like a Joker will work better but most of the time a tube is all I need. I guess I should mention that they don't know I recommend them and I get no freebies for doing so. I just like their product and have been a customer for many years and found them to be honest to deal with.
As for color, any form of black and chartreuse, white and chartreuse (joker), white and orange (this year) and the old clear water standard pink and white. Colors change from year to year.
Seems like your colors are some of my favorites and I have used Midsouth frequently. I tend to use the larger tubes. Thanks for the info.
Larger tubes as in over 1.75”?
Yes. I like the 1.75" but generally prefer 2-2.5" and even use 3" occasionally.

I was having to much fun and not paying attention so now I’m ideling across open water in white caps. The boat could take plaining out but my back can’t. Texoma has a very patternable swell set. Every 7th swell will be taller than the rest on this lake. At least on the end I fish.
I don’t know why I bother going fishing when it’s windy this time of the year. It’s a soft bite and I can’t fish slow enough.

I did not weigh them but I will say that my fish cleaning table is 22" wide. I was targeting crappie when I caught them and they were a lot of fun on the old ultra-lights.
The weather man had predicted the end of the world for last night and for some I guess he was right. If I exaggerated a little I could say that there is 2" of snow on the ground.
Can’t fish today so I painted a few ice spoons just to stay in the right frame of mind.

They are all either white or chartreuse on one side and a variety of colors on the other side. After painting I will dip them in clear vinyl paint and sprinkle a small amount of glitter on them and then dip them in the clear vinyl 2 more times allowing them to cure between coats. Glitter comes in a variety of sizes so be sure and pick a size that closest matches the size of a shad scale as you can find.
I find in’s it very satisfying making my own lures.
Most importantly, always proof read you post because apple always incorrectly corrects your spelling.

I think I’m going to try a solo trip after church. Generally speaking, all I need is a fairly calm day to catch fish in the winter. It’s a solo trip because most don’t want to go in the cold weather. Living so close to the lake I only need enough to make a meal for 2 for me to consider it a success trip.

I figured the snow was melted enough and I wanted to see what the crappie would do following yesterday’s weather. We had at times 40 mph winds with 2” of snow and a low of 21 this morning. I did catch 2 crappie and 1 Striper and learned a very important lesson.
I learned to stay home and watch Wally Marshall instead of going fishing. :biggrin
