After being at sea a few days we'd run out of eggs and milk and went to the dried version. After about 6 weeks we replenished at sea once and took on 'fresh' eggs. The case
had 'cold storage, Italy, 1944' printed on the outside......and this was in about 1965!

The part about "printed on the outside" reminded me of my days as a first aid officer for the Forest Service on the bigger fires. We had a fire that took several weeks to control. Base camp was at a hike-in only location, and food and supplies were dropped by helicopter into a meadow about a half-mile down the mountain. After about two weeks of skimpy, canned rations, a couple of the guys ran down the mountain as the chopper made its drop. They found a crate with printing on the outside that was not totally legible, but they could make out "chops". They hustled up the mountain, went to the camp cook, and declared: "Cook us up some of these pork chops.......please." Cookie opened the crate and discovered that the printing actually said: "Chain saw with chaps.", resulting in a lot of these:
