Wister's been on my bucket list for several years. Someone told me years ago that the lake is surrounded by mountains, decreasing the amount of wind blowing across the lake. Not sure if this is true, but somewhere in Oklahoma.........the wind doesn't blow all day long....... right?

I have some friends that live down there that fish it all the time and they were showing pictures of 17 inch fish, yeah I couldnt believe it. In the last year I have been able to go to several good crappie lakes in eastern Oklahoma. Lake Wister is my kind of lake though, when I seen the layout, structure then the water color I got excited. Its worth your trip, I just wish I would have had time to stay a couple of days. This summer I will be fishing it more, my mom lives about 20 minutes from the lake. So I will have a chance to take mom crappie fishing! She's a pretty savoy crappie fisherman as well! EB

Well, if memory serves me right, either the current or former State record flathead came from Wister. I don't remember the exact weight, but it was over 100lbs. The Poteau river has (or did the last time I was there 15+ years ago) log jams and beaver huts. There are some rock bluffs on the North side as well, but I think they may be in deeper water.

Does anyone know where a good place to crappie/cat fish on wister would be? I duck hunt it, but have never fished it. I would like to have a good area i can throw a few cat lines out and crappie fish in between. Off the bank or a bridge would be the only way i could do it as i have no boat. I live in good ol' Wilburville so its a close lake.

I used to have pretty good luck from fishing the backside of the amphitheater on Carlton and below the bridge on Lake Wayne Wallace(sp?) when I was a teen.

Bovin, I also live in wilburton, but originally from heavener. So wister lake was where we did most of our crappie fishing. Talked to dad and he said they arte catching them in the main lake. if you put in at ward landing and head towards the camping site there is some decent brush piles to fish. Also if you go to potts mnt landing and fish the river, there is some good fishing all in the river.
