    Default Big Sallisaw Creek

Has anyone fished the mouth of Big Sallisaw Creek where it meets RS Kerr? It is my understanding that it is murky, stumpy, shallow and has alot of crappie. Hmm. I have a family reunion in late June at Fin & Feather Resort on Tenkiller. It might be worth a try. Anyone have any info?

    Thumbs up Big Sallisaw Creek

From the mouth of Big Sallisaw Creek all the way upstream for a mile or so is crappie heaven. Resist the impulse to go faster than idle speed... and if you have a trolling motor, use it instead. A trolling motor shearpin is Much cheaper than a new lower unit. I know!

The channel is along the right hand bank of the creek... will be somewhere between 17 and 24 feet according to the river flow. Most of the trees have rotted off near the waterline but the stumps still remain, as well as the logs on the bottom. There is a crappie or a channelcat on every stump, so take your time and have fun.

    Hope that helps you.

Albert - What are you doing over here? My trip to Fin & Feather is June 18-21 for my wife's family reunion. I will be visiting you and hopefully catching some more skippies. I will visit with you more about the best access to the mouth of BSC. Thanks.

The best place to access the creek is at sallisaw creek itself. Take I-40 t the Dewight Mission Rd exit, turn right and follow it all the way down to the park and ramp.

I haven't been to those ramps in years. I heard they were closed or sold to the Indians. Are they still open?

The old park is now the property of the Cherokee Tribe. They have really done a lot to improve the ramp area... lights all down the road and electricity served to the camping grounds. The ramp is still a single and a little narrow, hard to see in the dark. They mow regularly and now charge a small fee for camping.

To get to the mouth of the creek, head to the middle of the water from the ramp then bear right (starboard) behind the island. (do not try to pass between the island and the point... rocks and wading deep water) go straight ahead into the creek channel. Bear in mind that the Sallisaw Creek channel is as much as 24 ft deep in places, but the channel is very narrow, 20-25 ft. All waters not in the channel should be traversed at idle speed or use the trolling motor. I personally ruined not one, but TWO lower units in that area.
