Like Meatdragger, I am going to have to call BS on any black mountain lion sightings. Not saying that anyone didnt see a mountain lion, but the mountain lion was not black. Its just dark outside and you are seeing a silhouette or some other lighting issue was causing you to think you saw a black mountain lion. I'll also bet that half of the reported mountain lion sightings that people see are not mountain lions either. Regular mountain lion sightings in Oklahoma are super rare to begin with. I bet there are more bear sightings than mountain lion sightings.

Now there are black jaguars in Oklahoma, several of them actually, I think there are reports of some getting hit on the road. Sucks when they do get hit because they are pretty expensive cars. I personally like the XJS series.

    @ Fiver000

Not sure how competent you are in identifying wildlife but perhaps this will help you out. This does not pass as a black mountain lion, or a jaguar for that matter:

No just kidding, I am sure you did see a large black jaguar mountain lion hybrid tiger (liger). It was probably on your way back from catching that 12lb crappie.

    Default Oklahoma Mountain Lions

Around 1980, give or take a few years, on Highway 123 between 20th street and the Caney river in Bartlesville, had a cat cross the road in front of me. Probably in the 80 - 90 lb range. Looked pretty healthy and only took three steps/leaps to cross the road. Wasn't wasting anytime. Standard color, tawny tan. At this same time frame, I was heading through the Osage County woods to a camp out with the boy scout troop I was a sponser for. It was dark as I had to work late. You get that feeling you are being watched and the hair stands on the back of your neck and you are glad you are carrying a gun. Then that scream and the blood drains and you sure are happy to see the camp fire just ahead. I will never forget that sound. Would be happy to never hear it again under those circumstances. About 1995, a friend heard his donkey going nuts and looked out and a big cat was in a tree above it getting ready to have lunch. He scared it off and called the Oklahoma Wildlife Department. They sent a tracker out to see if they could tranq it for relocation. Saw lots of tracks from the Caney river basin south of Bartlesville to the south side of the city but never saw it again. This year, a friend brought me some plaster casts he had taken of some tracks on his place just south of Bartlesville and east of 75. They were about 6" or so with a good 1 1/2" claws. Pretty good size cat. This is all located in Washington county around the Bartlesville area. Now in the late 60's and early 70's up in Lincoln County Kansas, there were reports of a Black panther in the area. The only sightings of it described a large black cat with a hint of rosette patterns which would identify it as a Jaguar way north out of it's normal range.

Been an interesting read. Thanks for posting. They are a beautiful animal but not to be triffled with under any circumstances.

The black jags are escaped or released, not native. I am sure they have come and gone through the years, but to say there is a breeding population in the wild is far fetched. Mountain lions in Oklahoma have been documented (not sightings, but dead, caught alive and photographed) enough times to suspect that they may be beginning to establish a breeding population in some parts of the state. By the way I used to live on a mining claim in the exact area in south central Arizona where the Jaguar was documented. It is incredibly rugged and desolate. And the whole general area is much less populated than Oklahoma. The area from interstate 19 to Sasabe has one thru dirt road and its 30 by 30 miles. The mountain tops are over 7000 feet with valleys that head straight into Old Mexico that are 3500 feet. These valleys are historical animal travel corridors. Animals come straight north from the Sierra Madre. Sycamore canyon for example has a Mexican mountain parrot of all things. Without these corridors to the scant Mexican populations there would be no Jaguars in Arizona possible today. If you care to check it out, the AZ game and fish put a radio collar on a Jaguar they caught Jaguar Management . And nope, no black ones ever seen, lol.

Man, what a thread. Talk about a vision of Americana!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the everyone has posted and I most heartedly hope that it will continue.

Just for the record, those that have said that that which some claim to have seen couldn't have been, Never say never! The cross timbers of Oklahoma have some very remote terrain as well as the mountains in the S.E part of the state.

There has never been a case of a black Cougar in the wild or in captivity and it is unanimously accepted by breeders, biologists, and scientists that melanistic or black cougar doesn't exist. Anything is possible but you have to look at the odds. Anyone who says things like "I see Cougars all the time" or "I've seen black Cougars many times" is just crazy. There are Cougars in Oklahoma for sure. We have seen a couple of trail camera pictures show up and we've captured or killed on or two but they are extremely rare. Black ones do not exist and a Jaguar would have to travel over 1000 miles outside its documented range to get to Oklahoma. The fact is, almost every sighting of this nature is just a case of mistaken identity.
Are you a wildlife biologist? No, I mean really.

I've seen the issue of a "black" panther debated on one or two of those wildlife shows where they are discussing the feasibility of large cats migrating up into North America from South America. There have been numerous reports\accounts\sightings all across North America, but to my knowledge, none of them actually verified by officials.

Usually turns out to be a large black alley cat photographed from a distance and appearing to be a full size mountain lion cat. Optics can be deceiving and I don't think there is any documentation on black panthers being this far north. But they do exist in the jungles of the Amazon river basin, so who knows, they might very well be here.

Armadillos migrated into North America from South America and they have little ol short legs........... hahahaha. I'm bettin they took the bus.Rofl
AMERICANS: Willing to cross a frozen river to kill you, in your sleep, on Christmas, totally not kidding, we've done it.
