Oologah Archives

Oklahoma has several lakes that offer great Walleye and Saugeye fishing. For me, the best time of year is late February into March. I look for water temps between 40-50 degrees and fish rocky points. Walleye/Saugeye will spawn in water depths anywhere from 1'-20' so don't be afraid to swim your bait through a variety of depths. Water clarity and bottom characteristics can vary their spawning depth greatly. They are an awesome prehistoric looking fish that fight hard and taste pretty darn good in a frying pan. Oh yeah and if you didn't know...they have TEETH! So lipping them like i've done in the picture is ill-advised if the fish is still lively.

I would be looking for the females NOWas they have the feed bag on getting ready for the spawn fish rocky points wind blow if you can it seem to me that when the water gets into the low to mid 40's it's game on. around 48 the females stop biting and head for the rocks and the only bite you can get is reaction or a foul hook.Heading that way this week end

I have caught many in NE Oklahoma waters. I have an eight pounder mounted and on my wall from a few years ago. I have had my best luck fishing below the dams in the eddys when the gates are open. Below Kaw dam is excellent, but so is below the Oologah dam when the current is rolling. However, I have also caught some in the Verdigris river near Nowata fishing the gravel bars. They are excellent table fare!

I can't believe it has been almost a month since someone posted in this thread. It had slipped to page 2 it had been so long. I just wanted to say my home improvement project will be complete tomorow. The rest of the week I am heading to the Bassmaster Classic to hopefully watch Edwin Evers win. When I get home the crappie are in trouble and if they are biting I may be in trouble also from my wife, because I will be going everyday I am off work. LOL!!! Did take my son out for 2 hours this afternoon after church and we caught 2 dinks. It was a beautiful day but I didn't have time to do much looking around.

Took my youngest son out today too. It was a rare occasion, he'd never even been in my boat. He likes fishing, but playing music is his passion. We had fun just shooting the bull and spending time together. We spent the day teaching him how to do the little things. I think he had fun, he caught the biggest crappie. Really nice today, almost too perfect. The lake was slick with almost no wind. Never do very good when there's no wind at all and today was no exception. We got a late start fishing from 10 to 4. We finished the day with 4 keepers and turned them loose. Tried shallow and deep, and couldn't find any fish shallow. Sonar showed a few fish at 18ft on brush and that's where we caught the few we caught. I've been out twice in the last 30 days an caught 12 keepers and 10 keepers on those days. It's been tough fishing for me this winter. I guess I could've posted and told everyone I can't figure out where they're at.

Well, made my first trip to Oologah today instead of yesterday as planned. We got on the lake around 9:30 and headed for some brush piles. Right off the bat the trolling motor wasn't working. Found a battery had gone bad even though I charged them Friday. No big deal just hooked that lead up to my big motor battery and moved onto fishing. Fished about 30 different brush piles from about 12-20 FOW. All I can say is we didn't get snunked being our first time on the lake. Caught 3 dinks and 2 keepers which we returned to the water since we didn't have enough for a mess. Saw many boats moving and saw many fishing, did not see any other boats catch a fish at all. Talked to one boat and he had nothing. Blue bird days like today have always been tough fishing for me and today was no different. I will be back. Oh yeah fished Blue Creek today.

Well I have had the crud since last Sunday and still can't kick it. Wanted to get my new xpress crappie boat on it's main fishing voyage this weekend but got to get better. Hopefully next weekend I will be fishing out the new boat from Wild Bills Boats down by Durant. My father in law ran into him at tackle show. Thanks Bill for helping me get this boat ordered and in my garage. Hope to have many years of great fishing with it if I can ever get it out fishing. Still have to break motor in all the way. Just had it out right after I got it to test it for 15 minutes and that's it. Never crappie fished Oolagah or really crappie fished much anywhere. New to me. Oolagah will be the lake for me so I hope I figure it out.

I hear Kaw is a dandy too!

Went out to Oologah yesterday evening. First I fished several deeper areas and only managed two dinks. Went to a shallow area that I typically fish during the spawn and decided to cast jigs in around 8 foot of water. I caught 30 keepers from 4:00 - 6:30. The largest was 15 1/2". The fish are shallow and full of eggs.
