Three summers ago (at least I think it was three), we caught a number of really good calico bass at I40. If we had 40 fish, 15 or more would be blacks. I personally hardly ever caught one prior to that and routinely catch them since.
I had never heard them called calico bass. These are what I now as calico bass.

I have caught several thousand fish at I 40, and very few have been specs, but I don't usually fish there in the summer.
