I tried Gaines today and it was tough

Went right after I made the post earlier today, didn't get a bite. But went back this evening and the males were being caught along the bank and also in shallow water along the walkway to the dock. I would say its the beginning here for the spawn.
Fished Mill Creek (south from boat ramp) last night and today.
Last night (Friday) I was finding nice fish right on bank and near any wood, only fished a couple of hours and caught 4 nice ones and lost about 6 on minnows.
They were just sucking the minnows. Right before I left I decided to try the strike king bitsy minnow (1/4oz sq bill in minnow / shad color) I caught 2 of my 4 on it in about 5 minutes and lost 2 more then had to leave, it was almost dark. It was very active, lots of fish in bank.
Went back this morning for 5 hours (10-3:00), not prime time but still should have been good, nice cloud cover, wind not too bad, and the sun came out about 2:00. I found dinks on bank and they were scattered and hard to catch. I caught a couple of decent fish on 2 very faithful stumps. I talked to a number of other fishermen and they also were having it TOUGH. Everybody siad the same thing I was seeing. WHAT HECK they were biting yesterday?
So again the front pushed them back off bank or gave them a semi-serious case of lockjaw.
I haven't given up, it it's not raining too hard in the morning I'll be going back and see if they feel better.
Good luck guys and dolls, be safe and HAVE FUN !!!!!
I caught a nice mess yesterday. Definitely thumping the jig. Hope this rain doesn't mess it up. Caught probably 50-50 male/female in the rock creek area.
Fished Eufaula Saturday with Todd and Aaron we ended up with 25 catching 1/2 of them right on the bank 1ft deep. Blk pink beaver bottom baits. EB
Thank you Brian for being close to the ONLY person that holds their phone upright when taking pics to put on C.C. Me tips Hat at ya!
EB. I see I'm not the only one getting my lures untangled from the brush. I had to leave one yesterday because there was a big old snake in it. I donated a balsa cork, Timmy Toms weedless jig and a Beaver Bottom Bait that got hung on something under the brush. Hate snakes!!!
Wasn't packing and did I say I hate snakes! They're everywhere now. I was hoping some of the flooding wiped em out! Next time out, it'll be a dead snake and get me rig back.

Kept 8 after fishing a couple of hours at the boat ramp at Arrowhead Estates. All nice big black slabs and they are hitting a jig being dragged on the bottom. Usually when the jig bumps a rock or something on the bottom and bounces up, BOOM, that's when they hit. Water temp was 58 and the wind at 8mph out of the north.
I was headed down to the Porum area tomorrow for the weekend and was wondering if anyone has had any luck on that end of that lake yet this season. I went couple weeks ago and all the crappie I caught were in 12-16 ft of water. I was just wondering of they might me moving up on the north end or anyone have any luck yet.
Thanks.
Got blanked the last few days around the house in brush hill then went over to the boat ramp today and tried the rocks with some crappie kicker jigs. Nothing for 30 minutes... drank an F5 beer and tried it again.. they turned on for 45 minutes, caught 20 or so... 10 worth keeping... then they turned off. I don't understand them at all.
Should have recognized the pattern and drank more F5's!
I attempted to duplicate last night's F5 pattern... failed excursion with zero bites.
At Least the f5's were good
Anyone catching them on the banks yet? Headed that way Saturday and wondered if anyone had some reports.

Different areas of the lake will produce a spawn sooner than others and since I only fish the area by the boat ramp here in Arrowhead Estates, its the only place I can give a fairly accurate report. Towards the end of last week, the big males were coming in, almost black, and aggressive. They didn't show any signs of "fanning" because their tails were worn not down at all. Water temp has been climbing and got up to 56 last week when they were biting, but starting last Monday, the lake level began to rise and has came up 2.75 feet. Water temp is now 58 and holding. Catching very few now compared to last week. I haven't cleaned any females, but my fishing buddy has and he said the egg sac hasn't formed yet. Are we approaching the spawn.........not sure. Has the spawn come and gone...... I don't think so. I believe the water temp has to be up around 62 or higher to trigger the spawn. My guess is the spawn will come, but it may be two or three more weeks. Remember, this is my opinion for this one area only.
Reporting from Mill Creek here. We were catching crappie pretty good despite the rapidly rising waters here. You just needed a pair of waders to jig the trees, but they continued to bite. The females I've caught all carried eggs as well.
However, everything changed yesterday. I went back out at 7:00 a.m. and jigged a female out immediately and assumed I was going to have a great day, but then 30 minutes passed without a bite. I spotted a couple of gar, but didn't think much of it. I had better luck catching crappie midday anyway, so I packed it up and took a break.
I came back about noon and almost immediately, i spotted another gar, cruising along the bank. Then another, and another, and another. I had to move my rig on a couple of occasions to prevent one from taking it and snapping my poor panfish pole. I had zero bites and I quickly began to realize these gar were basically everywhere. I'm assuming they're spawning, since I saw a few of them swimming in pairs, and spooked out the few crappie left after the water rose. I'm gonna try again today, but I'm not too confident.
I had read an article once that Todd Huckabee had wrote stating if your in an area that you see gar then you are in an area the crappie are. He stated that crappie and gar like the same conditions to spawn and that the gar were a good sign.
Now some of the old timers claim that gar are there eating the eggs that the crappie drop and that they will scare any crappie out of the area.
I have know idea who to believe on the matter, but just wanted to share that with you.
Lake Eufaula looks like chocolate milk...........very dirty.

Smashed the fish on the north end!! Fish were caught shallow and we're yanked out of the water easily using the Huckabee pro series 10 footer. Fish were caught on the beaver bottom hair jig with a #2 hook. Purple head orange body. Fishing slowed down around 2pm. Today's fishing was done from the bank since the boat is out of commission .
All I know is the crappie stopped biting and the gar began showing up. Whether or not they're related is anybody's guess. If there's one thing I've learned after coming back to Eufaula last year, it's that there's a lot of older folks out there that know a lot more about fishing than I do. Haha.
That being said, I caught 2 more bright and early and I was seeing no gar and then I got no more bites. A couple of hours later I started seeing the gar again and the only bite I got was a gar running off with my last tuxedo colored jig, so I opted to come home and mow my lawn. I probably won't have another chance to go out again before the storms roll in in a few days, but I hope my best days are still ahead of me this season.
I can't complain too much, though. The 10 crappie I've caught is still better than the 4 I caught all year in 2015.
When I first moved to Oklahoma, I saw a bunch of gar on the rocks at Hefner, so I didn't fish there. I moved about 200 yards to where a guy was slip-corking for cats. He hadn't done any good, and asked if I had caught any. Told him no, but I had seen a lot of gar on the rocks. He brightened up and asked where they were. He zipped down there and caught a limit of BIG cats in no time. Ever since then, my cat rod comes out whenever I see gar on the rocks. There are always plenty of the cats, and they are usually big.
And yes, I prefer to eat crappie, but I have been known to eat an occasional slimy trash fish.
Good topic. Never thot about the presence of the gar relating to the crappie. If the gar are in fact there to eat the eggs, that would mean the crappie would hav to be there to lay the eggs for then to eat? Or like todd says they just like same spot. Interesting
From experience. Gar and crappie will spawn in same area. Gar spawn a little later than crappie.
What we have seen happen is if the gar come up early for their pre-spawn into those areas where crappie are, the crappie will hold tight to cover. So if you start to see lots of gar. Start fishing cover and fish so tight to it you start losing jigs.
This year the gar are very early. From buffalo to brushy gar have been thick as of week before last.
And yes the cats do line up with the gar when you see the gar doing their whale surfacing routine. Here in a week or so blocker bridge will have tons of large gar and the cats will be be on under them.
I saw that Checotah got hit pretty hard last night....hope everyone made it through ok and didn't get too much damage..... Did the Eufaula areas receive much damage as well??
It got a little scared around midnight last night, no electric from then until about hour ago. Trees uprooted, signs busted, electric line down, did some damage. But we are ok. EB
Maybe cpd21 will post he will know more details of the damage done
TC and I were out in the boat. We'd been watching the storms for ever and when we saw the whiter flashes not far west, pulled out the smart phones and had a look at the radar. The storms were moving a lot faster than before so we decided to head for the ramp. Had the boat back in the shop and TCs stuff back in his truck about 15-20 minutes before the wrath hit. He got to drive through it while I just watched my DISH signal go away. I do believe the front created some really low pressure which may have been why neither of us got bit. He did however pick up a small blue about two hours before it hit. They can't stay away from him!
Took Junie spider rigging against her will LOL she is a 'Feel the Thump" type of girl. We spider rigged beaver bottom baits tipped with minnows in 3-8ft of water ended up catching enough for supper, I don't know what it is about those fresh fish but man there isn't anything better. EB
wheeeew.....been a long past couple of days but the storm thumped us pretty good.....lots of power lines, trees, a few roofs etc etc......everything is close to being back in place again. Biggest deal is the Lord was with us because we had No injuries. Thank you Lord and also thank you for all the prayers sent our way...

Went yesterday evening from 4:15-8:00 and caught 17 keepers. We were fishing brush, trees, and stumps in 3-7ft. The fish were pretty scattered. We caught at least 1 every place we fished. Water clarity was really good, I could see the fish in my livewell. EB
