Finally caught a male with ragged fins on Saturday about 9 fow and 4 ft deep. He was just a tad too small so I sent him back to his nest. Arrowhead area off the banks. They are coming my way. Still only catching 8" ones. None worth keeping.

I fished most of the day Sat. Started at crowder ramp, worked my way over to and up Rock creek and back again. I caught prob 25 fish total, only 7 keepers. The wind was far stronger than forecast, so it limited where a person could fish. I was being stubborn and fished less than 2 fow most the day trying to get fish actively spawning. Found out that most the fish were in 6-8 fow and not right on the banks. Did catch the biggest crappie I have ever caught which was nice and lost one that was right in the buck brush that was so big at first I didnt think it could be a crappie. Wish I would have got that one- yikes, it was huge. Caught them on various BG,s in the blue colors. I think I am going to hire a guide soon, Eufaula is better than I have been catching them. I need some tips and to get some confidence on that lake.
Fished Friday Saturday and Sunday and the bite was slow all three days. Due to the wind mostly it limits you where you can fish. We had 17 keepers on Friday, 26 keepers on Saturday, and 12 keepers on Sunday. IDK what was wrong, Todd and Barry were also averaging between 20-30 fish per day. The numbers last weekend were down. We are not catching those 50-100 fish numbers like we used too. But the south end of the lake is muddier than normal and I dont like that at all! I may have to venture out and guide some different areas in the near future! EB
Eb ,, what has the water so dirty ?? it hasnt rained that much has it ,, was down on the south end saturday managed to scrape together about 25 Keepers and they were all in a foot or less of water ,, i would dip my jig around stumps and brush ,,it was so stinking dirty i dont think the fish could see my jig i would have to leave it in there for like 15-20 sec before they would hit it( this is in 10 inches of water!!!) Eufaula has not been kind to me this year ,, i can go to gibson and take this abuse
When the water's really murky like this, I dip my jigs in cod liver oil with vanilla extract mixed in...........sure makes a difference.
About three or four years ago I caught a 12' or so crappie that had no eyes. It wasn't like the eyes had been lost either. It was an obvious birth defect because there were just two flat silver places where the eyes belonged. Not even an eye socket.
Point here is that that fish was most likely three years old, and very healthy, yet it had never seen it's meal. They don't need to see to eat.
Now there is a true fish tale!! 12' crappie!!! :biggrin
must have been one of those cave dwelling crappie with no eyes......lol......joking Tim....Ranger
I've been catching some nice fish right on the bank the last two evenings! EB
Do you do guide work EB? pm me with details if you do kind sir. Thanks
Coming all the way from Fort Worth to camp with the family and hopefully enjoy some great Eufaula fishing. We are camping at site N27 Hwy 9 landing. I've got a little bass buster I'll take my dad and brothers out on one at a time. We'll also be fishing from shore. Looks like we'll be fishing some jigs and shad around stumps and such. Any other tips you guys could throw this way? We'll also have some poles out for catfish at night. So looking forward to this weekend!
Bugtussel or elm point for that general area ,,crowder or rock creek just a little north of there
Fished the Crowder and Rock Creek area today til 2pm and had 31 keepers with several at and over 1 1/2lbs and all well over 10". Had like 10 at 10" or less and threw them back to grow up alil...left there and headed for Arrowhead and unloaded at 2:30 and fished til 5pm. Ended up with 44 keeper crappie and a good sunburn. It was Yum Wolly Bee's today in pumkin/chart and lime/chart with 1/4oz head..mine and unpainted. WT was a balmy 76 when I unloaded and got up to 79 before I left Crowder area. Now Arrowhead was already hot when I got there and was 80 degrees at the ramp. Drink alot of water when the temps rise at or above 90 degrees fellers and gals that will make your day on the water alot more enjoyable. Fish were in 2' to 5' DOW and relating to wood and rocks......Ranger
Panfish, If your talking in the Bugtussel area, well its Bugtussel city ramp, not a good place to pull your boat up to the bank and its kinda bad if there is a hard south wind or north if your by yourself. But thats about all you have done than way. Hwy 31 Landing at Elm point isnt bad, Hickory point up in Gaines. It really depends on where your going to fish.....Ranger
I'm thinking about driving down to Eufaula and find some place to stay or just pitch a tent for the weekend. The lakes up here are all badly flooded and it sounds like Eufaula is the only place that's somewhat stable. It's about a 2 hr drive from here, but it may be my only chance of getting some crappie before the spawn ends. I'll probably just work from the banks. I don't know the area, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
DrNip narrow down your boat areas..what part of the lake you interested in..Its a big lake, its like fishing 3 different lakes depending on what kind of water clarity you are seeking....we have red muddy water, brown muddy to stained, and clear.......Ranger
Ketchem, If I was you I think I would seek out some rap on the lower end of the lake along Elm Point, Crowder, Rock Creek, or Coal Creek and fish off the rocks. Cast down the bank with cork and jig, road runners, or minners....the fish are really refelecting to shallow wood and rocks in 2' to 5' DOW. Hope this helps....Ranger
Sorry I'm not use to huge lakes, lol. I would probably want to keep it close to I-40 as I will be coming east on it from Shawnee area.
Of course if it was worth my time to drive a little further I would. If you had one place to fish at there would would it be?
Well the north end has been pretty dirty and tough for me this spring and a few others I could mention but I would fish anywhere from the Arrowhead area to Bugtussel area which includes Crowder and Rock Creek area, Blocker Bridge area, and the lower Gaines which runs from Blocker Bridge to the mouth of Hwy 9A Bridge. Thats the part of the lake I like the most due to water color and depth. We all have our perference and that is mine. Wish you all the luck.....Ranger
Fished the Rock Creek and Crowder area early today and caught 12 nice keepers til the wakeboard boat and boarder's washed us on the bank in the narrows between the ramps and then left to fish the rap leading inot Crowder and couldn't get bit...left and went to Arrowhwad and finished with 25 total keepers. The fish I caught in the Rock Creek area were caught long poling in 3' to 5' DOW along the rap. Fish caught in the Arrowhead area were caught on cork and jig in 2' of water.......Ranger
Daren which is EB's brother climbed in the boat with me as I was leaving Crowder and fished with me in the Arrowhead area til Brain got back from his school hosting a Reginal Baseball tourney...we had a great visit and a good time.......Ranger
Ranger, you keep coming in my back yard fishing, you're going to have to hollar at me for a cup of coffee some time. I'm usually home, except today LipRipper and I fished down south in the Coal Creek area. Started out at the Blocker Bridge area, never got a bite, went on further south and got into them good in Coal Creek just west of the bridge over 69. Pumpkin\Chartreuse was the color of the day and they were in 2 feet of water.
Stink keep the coffee pot handy I might just take you up on that coffee.....glad you and Leland got into em. EB was down coal creek way early yesterday and didn't do any good..he and Darren his brother called me at about 9am and I had 12 at that time so they came to Crowder..Darren jumped in my boat when EB had other duties to attend to at the baseball field at school...we got ran off the banks from a wake boarding boat pulling 2 skiiers and wake boarder with his tanks full and making huge waves in the narrows of Rock Creek..wish I had something to teach him a few manners but I didn't..thats when we showed up at AH...picked up a few on cork and jig then started hitting the shallow brushpiles in the Blocker area......Ranger
Fished the Dam area for 5 hours on sat for the first time. Caught about ten black male crappie in the shallows in full dress and 2 black female crappie, didnt keep any. They were all from 8-10 inches, all on wood. Water was clear and only 72-73 in the late afternoon. Caught as many small bass as crappie with my jigs. Bg shad colors were what they wanted, no bright colors in that clear water I guess. Lots of boats, wont try it again till winter.
Ranger 09, you were in my area too! Jim lives very close to me, and I can see the Arrowhead ramp from my dock. Do you have a boat that says Ranger 09 on it? I talked to someone the other day while they were in that boat. I was on my dock fishing.
No coffee at my house....it would probably taste like sludge...I don't drink it or know how to make it. LOL
No it doesnt have Ranger 09 on it Peke...its a red/white Ranger VX188 Comanche with a Yamaha Motor, I do have a Crazy Angler Tackle lazer cut logo on the side though since they provide me with baits and I represent their company......Ranger
remind me not to ask for coffee at your house Peke...lol
Fished around Onapa sunday afternoon only pulling in 5 dinks. I had some minnows left so I thought I would cross the road and try to catch a bass out of the Onapa lake. No bass but to my surprise I pulled in 23 10" + crappie, yes out of the Onapa lake. I have never caught a crappie out of that hole of water but had heard about people catching some out of it. It was game on the second the bait was in the water. Minnows and some BG baby shad in blue ice, I couldnt keep them in the water. The fish was in 4 FOW.
UGGGG!!!!! back to work darn it...........Ranger
Rustler, were they black crappie or white crappie?
My buddy called about Noon and wanted to go fishing, so we decided to meet at Gentry Creek at 2 p.m. The wind wasn't bad until we got on the water, and of course it picked up. banghead We hit the South East side of I-40 and fished in 4 to 10 ft of water. Fished about 3/4 of the way down and never picked up a fish. Then headed to Emerald Bay and fished it. Tried shallow as 1 ft and as deep as 10 ft. and picked up one here and one there. No real pattern. I even caught a male in about a foot of water on a blk/chrt beavertail under a cork.
My buddy did manage to catch one that would break the 2 lb mark and another that would get close along with a 3 lb Bass. Some people are just hot on some days!! As it was getting late and the wind still wanted to blow, we headed in but stopped at the ODWC attractor in the small bay across from Gentry Creek. Picked up a nice 12 incher at the mouth but that was all. Ended the day with 8 nice Crappie and 2 nice Bass. The favorite bait of the day was blk/pink beavertails.
Kinda disappointed we didn't find them heavy on the banks like we thought they would be. I think the front that moved through last night/this morning had something to do with the fish not wanting to bite well. Water temp was 74 to 76 just about everywhere we went. Also the water was pretty muddy (big shock for Gentry Creek huh? :yikes)
Went to a friends dock at arrowhead yesterday.brought home 24 that were all over a pound.one was over two pounds and my wife lost one that i bet would have been close to lake record.she got it to top and i thought it was a bass at first, but it wasnt.she was sick when it broke her line.most of our fish were caught on minnows.they were scattered for 1ft to 20ft of water.the ones i caught on bank were all males
I have been float tube fishing the banks all around the lake for 2 wks. and most of the fish that I have caught have been in
at least 2.5 ft. of water, haven't caught that many either, first year to crappie fish, still learning!
Fish were caught on red/char tubes and blk/char tubes. I noticed while wading the shoreline that
in places there were beds where fish had spawned, bass, carp, gar, I don't know, but they were
not crappie, there was no cover, just lots of beds on the bottom in waist deep water. Also noticed that
there were places along the bank that the water was much warmer than other places, however
the fish I caught were in the cooler water.
Went out yesterday evening for 3 hours and kept 15. We were fishing brushpiles in 6-12fow. We caught fish on every pile we fished. We would catch 2-3 good fish on each pile. Lots of little one though, it seems like the thiner brush held more fish. Also the brush towards the main channell held mpre fish as well! EB
EB do you have a theory on why we only pick up 2 or 3 fish per pile? I thought crappie were a schooling fish but they sure aren't acting like it this year, at least for me.
I remember our 1st get together one of our speakers, (a biologist I think?) spent time underwater observing crappie while he was scuba diving. He said a school of crappie would pass by occasionally to some collective area, perhaps a brush pile or dock, and stay for a while, then move along. The interesting thing he said was the school would have about the same amount of drop outs stay behind and the crappie that had been there, would move along with the school, thus keeping the number of "hang-arounders" about the same all the time.
I don't know if this is factual, but it makes sense to me.........sorta.
