Oh, I know they have a few big ones - it's just that you have to wade thru all the 6-9" dinks to occasionally get a few keepers. Thunderbird is considered a dink lake by ODWC. It has gotten a little better since they started the Saugeye stock some years back. A 17" Crappie would be a lake record at Thunderbird. As I recall, the biggest certified was a skinny 16+" a few years back and the current lake record is 16". Measure, weigh, photograph.Quote:

A 17" white crappie is going to average what, around 2.6 - 3 lbs??? You spoke of catching 17" crappie out of this lake at the beginning of this thread as well. Did you get a weight on any of these 17" fish you have caught from there this year?
SNaylor, I didn't mean to come across as if I doubted your word. My point was that any Crappie that size should be shared with all on the board. That's why we have the big fish thread. I always have a camera in my boat's glove compartment, in addition to my phone. I also always have a hand held electronic scale and a couple of measuring devices. Any big ones get measured, weighed and photographed (and anything approaching 16" usually gets released.) I may not always post them but if I mention it in a thread I'll put a photo up. Ranger, EB, and Odie always show some great photos, among others.
By your techniques I meant things like minnows vs jigs, structure vs shad schools, etc. You seem very successful at Thunderbird - not looking for gps coords, but more how you do it.
The current lake record was caught in the Spring 4 years ago near Twin Bridges. It is 16", 2.9 lbs with a 15.5" girth.
Guys, no need to keep this going as you can't agree with each other. No harm in disagreeing but no need to bring it here. Kids read this site, do you really want them to see this kind of stuff, I don't think either of you would so agree to disagree and move on.

I was planning on going today but my grandson has his last league game tonight, baseball, so I must go. Weather is suppose to kind of settle into not so much rain with temps getting into summertime mode. I will be out there Friday for sure and possibly tomorrow after work. Take a day off the boards and I miss all the good stuff! With work travel and training courses, its been almost 4 weeks since I fished last. Hope to correct that this weekend! Still might try Draper instead, just for something different...haven't decided yet.
Went out yesterday for a few hours. Tried something new for me - pushing cranks. Saw lots of fish but only picked up one dink. Then I went to a brushpile on a point that I knew about. One tree off to the side of the pile was loaded with crappie but the wind made cast and drag almost impossible. One more dink there and I called it for the morning. I was surprised I didn't pick up any sand bass or saugeye on the crankbaits.
Went about 2 pm tried the dam,caught a few small crappie.Moved to the west end of lake and found the sand bass surfacing everywhere,stopped and caught a few of those on my way to check out a spot off the mouth of river for crappie. I found some crappie stacked in this spot.Managed to catch several small ones and 4 keepers.Caught them on black chartreuse curly tail shadpole throwing up in about 4ft dragging back to 12ft.My graph was loaded with fish at 12ft.,may try to go back with shiners fishing tight line.I have done good in the past when it gets hot.Water temp. 83-84.I will also tell you I am fishing around wood,log jams !
