Local lake wins today. Beautiful day to get out and enjoy the weather. Unfortunately the fish didn't feel the same. Either that or Bigeyurk25 caught them all yesterday. Did manage a few decent ones. Crappie were caught on live minnow about 2' under a bobber. This also caught one gill and a couple green carp. The Gulp minnow was catching gills today and I'm not sure how most of them even got the jig into their mouths. The Gulp minnow also caught the perch and also a couple green carp too. Well, Spencer lake beat me out today, caught a few weeds and maybe a bit of sunburn, but that it. I had a great time, saw some swallows, wood ducks, a major goose fight, regular ducks, an osprey (saw him catch a fish) and... a bald eagle. So all in all not a bad day
I think the water is just a shade cold yet for too much action, couple more sunny days and we should be in the money

I got the shovelhead today and some small crappies. I'm just glad my friend could grab it.
I got those crappie yesterday with another friend.
Lakes down this way are finally starting to stabilize & improve some. Water color is better on lakes north and east of here but the lake where I got the shovelhead still only has maybe 6" of visibility.
We have a lot more white crappie down here, seems like you guys have lots of blacks. Actually I guess most of our lakes have a mix but my favorite crappie lake down here is almost all white crappie, in 40+ years of fishing there I've only seen 1 black and that was last year. The lake closest to me has a ton of short fish and we thought/hoped that the 9" size limit would improve the quality but so far we can't see it.
The main place we fish is portage lakes which is primarily black crappies. If I head out to mosquito, it’s mainly giant whitesQuote:

The crappie are loaded in every lake in the chain. I’d say if your catching weeds your fishing too deep. Also they tend to prefer the small presentations. 1/64 jig and 1inch black Shad gulp minnow works wonders for me. I like to use a small weighted bobber for pitching jigs. If your not into artificials a gold # 6 thinwire hook with a BB split shot rigged 6inches above the minnow with either a stick bobber or a small weighted bobber with a small live minnow does the trick as well. Docks and shallow 3-6fow weedbeads are big producers at portage right now. As the water warms the wood will start holding spawners. Once they get on the wood it will be show time fish every cast.Quote:

Ok so to you all -- what kind of baits -- I have no objection to artificials. On sunday I was throwing 1/32 and 1/64 on various tubes, jigs, and twistertails, spinners, spoons, and small crank baits -- is the addage of using bright baits in muddy water and dark ones in clear a good general rule?

As bobber stated, 1” gulp alive, black shad or emerald shiner color. On 1/32 jighead. Best color jighead for me has been black but when they are in good, you can throw any color. I use nothing but gulp. You can buy a jar for like $6 at fisherman’s central on 93. I also buy it from marks bait and tackle out on 14 in Ravenna depending where you are.Quote:

While I was out Sunday the water was very clear, you could see down 3-4 feet deep. I was throwing a black and white gulp and getting some bites here and there. Changed depths and it was the same. Changed the color to a chartreuse gulp and the fish were jumping on it as soon as it hit the water. I don't know if that helps or not. Best of luck if you get out there this weekend. Depending what time you plan on going, The Pipe arack on Manchester Rd has every color gulp you can imagine. They also carry a ton of tackle and live bait. They open at 9:00 am.Quote:

The pipe rack on Sr 93 carries the little jigs 1/80th and 1/64. They are sold individually which sucks and is sorta expensive. When I’m out by mogadore bait and tackle. I stop there they sell them in packs. Jerry at long lake bait and tackle 855 portage lakes drive carries a good selection of the little jigs both individually and in packs. All bait shops mentioned are good places fisherman’s central included. I haven’t been to fisherman’s centrals new store yet but I hear it’s great. I always try and support little guys like jerry at long lake bait because we just don’t have good little bait stores in the area anymore like we used to and every little bit helps guys like that.

IF I dont have the boat with me (its due for an impeller replacement which might have it down on saturday) where are good places to shore fish? I know about the docks and the Fishing pier at the new state park by the launch ramps, any other good suggestions?
