We already had ice, the warm rain raised the overall temps, but the cold has again dropped the top layers....The Warmest water in Winter is found on the bottom. When lakes are frozen, normally the water on the bottom can be 39 degrees. It won't change again till Spring turn-over!
CJ has areas even warmer than that!

Like I said...being out Saturday with the Surface temps being 37 degrees, added a whole new piece of the puzzle about CJ in the Winter...I would have never thought what we saw was possible, but we got to see it with our own eyes, and in person.
Now I understand why the shad don't die in Winter, and ALOT of things going on with fish and their food!

Hey, do the math,if there is ice it has to be 32 degrees or less, if it's water, it has to be above 32 degrees. unless it's super cooled, Instine said that... just saying E= MC2

    Come-on Fritz...
Well, some people may not truly understand!

Once water freezes over on the surface, the ice and then snow acts as insulation, trapping the heat that's left in the lake. If you have a lot of Springs, or warm rainwater flowing in, it will continue to warm the bottom layers of the lake, even if the top is froze solid. Decaying matter, and other processes also add alittle heat and oxygen.
This is how all of the fish can survive!
It is almost like a reverse Winter thermocline, because all of the fish stay in just this warm zone....then because all of the fish are using up the oxygen on the bottom, this is the dead zone in the Spring...with the Spring turn-over, this is all the junk and smell that floats up! Then the lake processes start all over again!

I was privileged to be able to see this Natural Wonder in action!
