CJ WATER TEMPS AND FISHING THREAD FOR FALL 2015 & 2016

"That's been happening alot (All-over)....wonder if anyone is doing anything about it???"

20 years ago I ran into a young lady taking water samples from the LMR. The concern was all the fertilizers being used. Everyone likes to blame the farmers but really it's probably as much or more the home owners. All the farmland being turned into sub-divisions, all the perfect lawns take their toll. The lawn companies all used to have 3 treatment programs years ago, now they have 6. Sure it's a milder solution but they do it twice as often so is it really reduced? Look at how many new sub divisions have sprung up in the last 60 years. I see all these perfect lawns as a bigger problem.
Everything is job & growth driven in our economy and I truly understand that. Everything has a chain reaction with everything. I don't have the answers but I hope someone is at least looking at the problem.
PS....I don't have any weeds either :bash (it's my wife's idea) but we only let them treat it 3 times per year. If it were me I wouldn't do it...I have to cut it.

My Grandfather helped build a Golf Course in the 20's...he was the head Greens-keeper and MGR until his death, then my Uncle and Father took over, so I've worked on grass since I was 12...they were all Natural Grass-Men who saved ALOT OF $$$$.

Under Normal conditions, GRASS DOES NOT NEED ANY EXTRA FERTILIZER!
My 1.5 acre yard has no weeds....I can go around with a spray bottle or Dandelion tool, twice a month for touch-ups. THAT IS MY ENTIRE PROCESS.

Sixteen years ago, when I moved in, the yard was 90% weeds....I used 2 kinds of Weed-b-Gon in a tank sprayer, plugged the yard a Month later and sewed grass seed....the next year I had a few weeds and bare spots and took care of them....I have been "Weed-Free" since!

Most of my neighbors yards are disasters....except my 2 next door neighbors that wanted to learn the system!:):):)lol
I actually think I shamed them into keeping their yards nicer, and then they realized how much easier and cheaper it was to do it this way!

My grass stays at 4 to4.5 inches....I let it go to 5-6 if the summer is Brutal....most weeds will not be able to start with grass that tall. All of my "fertilization" comes from mulching the grass, and plugging 2x a year....the rest is from the air and God's watering!
People that mow grass short do not realize that they will mow more often and weaken grass, this is due to grass wanting to go to seed. That is grasses only concern....to grow and spawn!
If you cut it short, it weakens the grass, grass under stress will not be healthy, it will have poor root systems, weak blades, and poor disease resistance....it also allows weeds to get established.
That's where all the chemicals come into play...having to try to repair the on-going damage you are doing to your lawn.
If you do use a fertilizer after a harsh summer, you need to get A BALANCE SLOW RELEASE NATURAL fert for seedlings...it doesn't take much, you just want to boost it through winter...I like Espoma, it contains exact amounts of balanced natural nutrition (in NORMAL doses) that will all be used up by the grass.

Most store bought or Company layed ferts., are high in Nitrogen only, to make the grass green and grow fast...THIS IS NOT HEALTHY and a lot of the nitrogen (etc) is excess, and just washes away.
But like anything else, people don't want to research the facts for themselves and just listen to "Experts" trying to sell more product and services!
You're exactly right....most of that Algae growth IS FROM lawn treatment...so every time you look at your lake and are unable to fish it, think of all the nice pretty lawns....and the lack of understanding that have them looking like that!:):):)lol

My Cousin is one with no skin coloration, light blonde hair, eyelashes, etc....he cannot stand heat or sun....he lives in Minot, ND, and works on the base...he loves it!:)

My wife is a degreed horticulturist. You sound pretty much like her. She is very selective on who will treat our lawn and also selective on how she will let them treat it.
Our grass is always high and we use very little herbicide if any. We have about 3/4 acre and we only mess with about 1/2 of it. The other half is pretty much natural except for a few plants she add here and there. Only part of it gets any trimming and that only twice a year.

She managed an estate before she retired.

I hated it early in life, now I love it!...my Uncles son (same age), went to OSU for Agronomy and Golf Course Management...he graduated with Jackie Nicklaus and started working for Jack. Now he is the head of the LPGA Course Management team....he goes around before all the Tourneys and make sure the courses are Perfect!
Then he also travels all over the World speaking on Greens keeping/Management/Etc....BIG $$$$$....Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda!!!
Man, life's little decisions sure can take a turn!lol

My Tomato plants are about 2 ft out of the top of the barrel (planted at the bottom), and have plenty of blooms!:)

What do ya use for clover? I have plenty for everyone?

Weed-be-Gone has a smaller bottle that you can mix in a sprayer of any size, just for Clover and chickweed, and it works really well...I know Lowes and Walmart carry it!

and it's very effective too. One thing about herbicides is you really only need to spot treat the problem areas, not the whole lawn if it's not needed.

If it wasn't for weeds I wouldn't have a lawn. But my house sets inside of a 97 acre farm. I would have to spray half the valley to be rid of them. :biggrin

Still got Lil'suzie ,go lots of DR bill's, reduced the price again HELP
