I have a large brick ranch with full basement, with floor to ceiling windows...My biggest savings was from adding additional attic insulation, expanding foam for drafts, and sealing the good, thick double pane windows ....the attic insulation was minimal, the attic had about a foot of packed blown-in...I'm at the highest possible R-value now and my heating and cooling have been cut by more than half for over 4 yrs now...I also received the tax break for it....my house is now tight and sealed.
I cook almost every meal at home, I have Dale's live-in friends, during the week, and every other weekends, plus all summer. I have days of 2 showers each, because 13 year olds have noticed "chicks"! Also ALOT of laundry, feeding times, video games, music, etc.
I also have an Energy Sentry, alarm system, and programmable thermostat....Due to "The Womb" removing the house contents illegally, all of my refrigerators, stove/oven, washer and dryer, and water heater, are all new and energy efficient....all of my bulbs are LED, even my fish tanks.
My efficient furnace is the only thing gas...my high bill last year was 90 dollars, 80 so far this year, heat is at 68 during the day, and 70 when we're here...only have a gas bill for 4-5 months, normally 1 high one, 2 around 60, and 2 around 40.
My electric is around 80-90 in winter and 110 in summer with the AC set at 72...I don't open windows due to allergies...and I still have Columbia Gas and Ohio Edison.
Alot goes into your utility bills.
